Shared contacts (Outlook - all versions)

I am checking to see if I am missing something. I support a lot of users with different versions of Outlook, mostly running with Exchange Server. I know I can "share" my contacts and another user can "open other user's folder". This falls short of most user's needs because the shared address book can not be accessed to insert an address into a Word document or when addressing an email.

The solutions I have for this are:
    > Use a public folder (which opens up some issues for synching with handhelds - or at least have to buy more software to synch with public folders)
    > Give rights as needed and open "other user's mailbox"

Are there other solutions that I am overlooking?
