    Home Page Hijaak (IE 6.0)

My home page has been hijaaked by SearchCentral.cc and the option to change my home page has been greyed out.

What do I have to change to get my preferred home page back?

    Thanks

Sorry to waste your time folks - did further research - on this site (of course) - and was able to change the registry.

Thanks for all those who have posted to similar queries before. Much appreciated!

Have a look at this <!post=Star Post,296439>Star Post<!/post>. If SpyBot and AdAware don't crack the problem, go on to try HijackThis. HTH

Shouldn't a good firewall protect you the same as these applications?

Some of these come in as a virus and a AV program should catch them.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

It depends on how the spyware gets on your machine in the first place. Let's suppose that there is a process running on www.evildaemon.net that is randomly contacting every possible IP address in cyberspace. If it finds one that responds on the NetBIOS port, it might upload spyware to a shared folder on your computer. A firewall normally would block this type of access to your computer.

Suppose, on the other hand, that you download a some new freeware from www.make-money-fast.net that changes your desktop to an album cover in sync with your music player. This freeware is "supported" using spyware. Because you initiated the file download request, your firewall is going to allow the response free passage back to your browser.

This is why a firewall, while absolutely essential, is only one layer in the overall problem of dealing with malware. In fact, antivirus software really is your first line of defense, supplemented, as you feel necessary with specific anti-trojan tools.

Hi. Had the same problem and followed the instructions in this and other threads. I'd advise starting with Ad-aware as that will unlock the 'Home Page' field in Tools--> Internet Options--> General Tab---> Address.

Edited by <!profile=unkamunka>unkamunka<!/profile> to make the link "live" - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>

I just had my home page hijacked and locked. Tried using adware and spyware - but the home page remained locked and the unwanted Web site remained as my home page. I have just done a search of the internet and came up with <!mskb=320159>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 320159<!/mskb>. This gives a description on how to remove the unwanted URL. and also describes on how to gain control of your home page by tweeking the system registry. It worked, but the usual warning of being careful in changing settings to the registry, do apply. This article applies to various versions of operating systems and I.E. Hope it is helpful.
