    Hi Dennis:
    While in the header, if you start to type page x of y, you can press F3, the tab key, or enter & the field will be entered for you, provided you have Tools/Autocorrect.../Autotext tab/ & check the box that says "Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText & Dates". Note: I have Word 2000, so the tabs or language may be slightly different for you.

    You can also enter the fields directly by pressing Ctrl+F9 to enter field braces & typing <font color=red>Page</font color=red>. The go outside the field to type "of". Press Ctrl+F9 to enter field braces again & type <font color=red>Numpages</font color=red>.

    In addition to the methods Phil describes, the most commonly used AutoText entries relevant to headers and footers appear on the pop-up toolbar when you are editing either a header or footer.
