Word Templates - Loading from server

I am currently running MS Word 97 on an NT 4.0 (SP6a) client machine (NT 4.0 - SP4 server). I have set the templates folder as a location on our main server. When I click on File=>New, the 'New File' window appears, but no templates.

If I click on 'View Details' I am shown the date, size and type details of each template in the directory, but still no template name or icon!

I've checked permissions on the directory and folders and the settings seem fine (have even tried giving the 'Everyone' group 'Full Access' to the directory amd files - but to no avail!)

I'm pulling my hair out here - can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance

You didn't indicate if this is user/machine specific or if it's network wide, but if workstation-specific go to control panel/display and drop the video card accelerator a notch or two on the troubleshooting tab (I have seen it affect other items, though not specifically file/new).

    Hi Jon,

Save your hair Jon, it is nothing that you have done wrong. <g>

The problem has to do with a corrupted Registry key. Take a look at this article from the MS KB for detailed instructions:

This almost certainly has to do with the settings for the NT Server permissions for this folder. NT has a permission for allowing / not allowing a user to see the contents of a folder. This permission is separate from the permission to open or edit the files.

The user templates folder should be on the local hard drive. This is where Normal.dot is stored. Normal.dot should not be shared. If you need to be sharing toolbars, macros, etc., you should be using a global template.

Your shared templates should be in the workgroup templates folder.

See: (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm>http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), global templates and Normal.dot.

I should have read this before I replied to the original message. I hope Jon will tell us which it is, NT permissions or the registry key.
