    formula from formatting (XL97 sr2 on Win2K)

I have a range of cells with a list of names. I'd like to be able to colour any ONE cell (at random) red and then have a formula in a separate cell know which one of the list has been selected.

    Any suggestions?

There is a very useful page about Functions For Working With Cell Colors on Chip Pearson's website. You can use these functions in conjunction with (for example) INDEX and MATCH to return the selected name.

Or did you want one name to be selected at random automatically? In that case, see the attached workbook. Column B is hidden. Recalculate (press F9) to make a random selection.

Thank you, Chip's stuff looks promising.

As your post came in I'd just come across Chip's page via your pointer in <!post=this post,298465>this post<!/post>
