Change Tracking Will Not Turn Off! (Word 2002, SP2

I searched the forums but did not find a reference to this particular issue, so if one of this board's regulars knows where I can find the answer....point me at the sky!

The problem I am experiencing has to do with change tracking. A peer of mine reviewed a document I had created, and in doing so enabled change tracking so that I could review the modifications. After going through the document and accepting/rejecting the changes, I saved the document under a new filename and turned change tracking off. I am not certain if my peer was using the same version of Word, because she makes no secret of hating Office XP and prefers Office 2000. Whether that is a significant factor or not, I have no idea.

Tthe document still shows changes being tracked, regardless of the setting I choose. I have accepted all of the "changes" again, and also enabled/disabled change tracking through the Tools menu option, yet the document will not return to its "normal" state. Is there a resolution for this irritating behaviour?

    Thanks!

Not sure if this will help... but when you go to Tools/ Track Changes/ Highlight Changes does your setup look like the attached? just the other day one of my co-workers asked the same thing. The attached is a screen shot of mine (albiet I have 97 but it's the same thing in 2000 and hope it's true for 2002 but I can't check til I'm home) but for her we had to uncheck all the options.
    Hope this helps.
    have fun

    Hi Mark:
I'm not positive this is the answer, but if you've received the document as an email attachment, Word assumes you will make changes & send it back, so it's trying to be helpful. In Windows Explorer, right click the file & choose Properties. Look for & delete any custom properties that start with an underscore (_).

Added later: As a last resort, you could Insert/File... & insert it into a blank document. This would insert the text, etc. without any custom properties.
    Hope this helps,

Re: Change Tracking Will Not Turn Off! (Word 2002,

Sadly, that option is not present in Word XP. At the very least, not in the same place as it is in prior versions. All I show is the option to turn it on or off in the tools menu. I believe there is a way to change that setting but it's been moved in Word XP....if memory serves, which it may not at 5:00 on a Friday afternoon! (Actually I hope it starts serving <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> since it's quitting time!)

Re: Change Tracking Will Not Turn Off! (Word 2002,

Thanks Phil, I actually checked into that already having seen another post on the Word board regarding those custom properties. However, when I view the properties in Explorer, there are none that begin with an underscore.

Strangely, I did discover with yet another peer in the office that if you disable showing markup under the View menu that the problem gets hidden - but it does not go away, which is what I want to happen!

Re: Change Tracking Will Not Turn Off! (Word 2002,

To turn tracking on and off, I usually double-click the TRK indication in the status bar. Sometimes the indication does not change unless you click in the text again. If you cannot turn it off, perhaps the document somehow got protected so that all changes are forced to be tracked? If you see Tools>Unprotect then this could explain it.

Re: Change Tracking Will Not Turn Off! (Word 2002, SP2

While you sometimes can force Word 2002 to show older dialogs, it's equally convenient to use the TRK context menu to turn tracking on and off. Too bad there isn't a big "warning" about the visibility options, but there are so many now just for the screen that they wouldn't all fit in that box!
