    Netscape Highjacking (7.0)

I've use Netscape for quite some time and like it better that IE. Recently I logged onto the internet and as Netscape was loading and navigating to my home page, another window that looked like a message from Netscape, popped up. It was saying something about updating Netscape to a newer version. I wasn't interested and didn't have the time right then to mess with it. So, I closed it in order to go about my other internet business. Immediately, my homepage changed to Netscapes homepage and all of my bookmarks were gone. This has happened twice. I am now forced to use IE and I don't like it. Does anyone know what is happening and if I can recover my bookmarks from somewhere. The bookmarks stored several hierarchies under Documents & Settings are the default Netscape ones.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: Netscape Highjacking (7.0)

This has never happened to me using Mozilla, and I am not aware of it having happened to any other Mozilla users.

Mozilla 1.6 doesn't have the AOL chat connection, but has more advanced versions of all the other features of Netscape 7.0. OTOH, if you are only looking for browser and mail client functionality, I strongly recommend you look at Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird respectively. All three are available here.

You should be able to migrate your Netscape bookmarks intact to Mozilla.

    Hi Bill:
I would take a look at <post#=295803>post 295803</post#> & see if some malware is on your system. You might be able to recover your bookmarks by searching for anything named bookmarks. Maybe the file has just been renamed, rather than deleted. I'm assuming that you don't have a backup, as that would be the logical solution to recovering the bookmarks.

    Phil,
Thanks for the information. I'll certainly follow this advice. However, Ken's third paragraph speaks of IE being hijacked. Does this work for Netscape also?
Nope! No backup. That would have been too smart.
I'll do a search, as you suggest and see what comes up.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill

I have experienced "Hijacking" with Netscape but it is rare compared to IE.
Since I switched to Mozilla, and subsequently to Firebird & Thunderbird, I've not had any hijacking.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: Netscape Highjacking (7.0)

Over a year ago something similar happened to me. I had lost my opening/home page and bookmarks. The Profile Manager had also lost my profile. Sorry, I can't recall how, but I did find my bookmarks (try searching *.html, then open the files with a browser till you recognize your bookmarks). Then I switched to Firebird, and haven't had any of these problems since. (the loss of forced AOL content is not missed.)
