Zap edits for distribution: for XP Office apps

From http://www.CNN.com:

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- The ability to see who has worked on a document -- and what changes and suggestions each person has made -- is great for companies where many people collaborate on projects. But that level of detail can backfire on a company if the file gets circulated outside corporate walls, revealing internal squabbles and embarrassing editing catches.

Microsoft Corp. previously offered relatively cumbersome instructions for erasing changes and comments made in its Office suite, which includes Word and Excel.

Now, the software giant is offering a simple way to make sure a company doesn't inadvertently air its dirty laundry once a document is ready to be released. A free new download available on the Microsoft Web site lets users more easily erase such "hidden" data.

Dan Leach, group product manager for the Microsoft unit that includes Office, said customers really like the collaborative functions when they are working on a project. But, he adds, "We want to make sure people can turn it off."

Just wondering if anyone has tried it out...http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

MS says the download works for:
Microsoft Office Excel 2003
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
Microsoft Office Word 2003
Microsoft Excel 2002
Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
Microsoft Word 2002

Tried it, deleted it.

Thread starting <post#=327904>post 327904</post#> discusses this utility. The utility does remove metadata but it is very much a first attempt and can be improved.

The main problem is that it modifies normal.dot everytime Word starts so that you always get the normal.dot has been modified message when Word closes. As you can no longer tell if anything else has also unexpectedly updated the global template I deleted this utility.

Tony,
Fantastic catch. I hadn't seen that thread in General Office Solutions (as I don't venture in there much). Glad you kids are on top of all this!

I think there was an article in WOW discussing the tool's deficiencies sometime this year. I uninstalled it a while ago...

The WOW that Jefferson refers to is 9-01 with a followup in 9-02.
