USB Memory Card Reader (WinXP Pro SP1+++)

I installed a Sandisk USB 2.0 memory card reader. It works great for transferring pictures from my camera to PC. The installation was quick and automatic, and I set it up to launch the MS Scanner and Camera Wizard when a memory card is inserted. However, it placed a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system notification area. As I don't plan on removing the card reader anytime soon, I tried to find a way to delete this icon but so far no luck. Has anyone else resolved this issue?

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

I'm not so sure ya want to mess with that,,but to each his own. I do know one thing,,ya best not remove that piece of Hardware without it. I did that once and it caused me a lot of problems.

Paul, Can't you force it to 'always hide'? Won't that be good enough?

Paul, I looked at my home PC and realized that I've got the 'safely remove...' hidden in my system notification area. I think that might be for the media not the reader itself.

Does your card reader have instructions on this? I have used the safely remove with two different devices, as instructed by the manual:

Portable hard drive (STORIX): Use safely remove before powering down the drive and/or disconnecting the USB cable to ensure that all write buffers are fully flushed and no corruption occurs.

Minolta DiMAGE A1 camera: Use safely remove before turning off the camera after accessing the internal CompactFlash card as a mass storage device.[/list]As I can't really afford to trash a CF card, I'm going to take that advice.

As Jscher points out,,I would recommend using the Safely Remove program with such devices,,because if you don't it can cause some problems.

Re: USB Memory Card Reader (WinXP Pro SP1+++)

    Hi Paul.

Perhaps it is a SanDisk thing, or there again, related to the functionality of the device. I have the SanDisk ImageMate using a USB 1.1 port and the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is in the taskbar, similar to your environment. Whenever I attach my Lexar Media JumpDrive or IBM USB Memory Key to a USB port the SRH icon will show extra lines to ID what can be safely removed. Since the feature is there to ensure that all writing to a device has ended properly, it seems to work as expected for my Lexar or IBM memory drives. However, like your environment, The icon remains there for the SanDisk.

I suspect that because it is a media read/writer device attached to the USB port then it wants to play by the rules to ensure that no writing to the device is happening. I would bet that if you unplugged the SanDisk, the icon would disappear... but don't do it if you still have a media card inserted and files are being transferred.

I, like you, have the SanDisk permanently attached and have no desire to unplug it. Thus, I have learned to live with the SRH icon.

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    Bob

Re: USB Memory Card Reader (WinXP Pro SP1+++)

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I may have to live with the SRH icon in the notification area as I prefer not to hide inactive icons.

The reason I thought I could dispense with this icon is that the SanDisk ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer is installed optimized for quick removal by default (see att.). The SanDisk documentation states that using the SRH icon is not required to disconnect the device under Windows XP.

To remove only the media card, the documentation states to right click the SanDisk device in "My Computer" and select "Eject" before pulling it out.

    Cheers,
    Regards,
