Copying Error Messages, Context Menus, etc (SP1)

In XP Home, is there a way to designate screen text that can't be highlighted/selected, and copy it to an editable file?
For example, Error Messages, Context Menus, displayed text from applications, etc.
This could be done by saving the screen and then applying optical character recognition, but I'm looking for something less complex.
I thought I had heard of such an application but I can't find it.
    Thanks

Well, I found something that's close to (but far more than) what I need:
    SnagIt, from http://www.techsmith.com/
It's a 30 day demo, and I expect to need it only rarely.
I'd still like to find a smaller, _freeware_ tool.
