    Windows Driver (Windows XP)

    Hello everyone:

Can anyone give me advice on how I can allow the Window Fax Driver to work with Winfax Pro.

I am using the U.S. Robotics 56K External modem. I am using the com1, but if I shut down my computer for the day, then turn on the system the next day, Windows XP indicates that the modem is not present. So I try to install the driver for the modem, and Windows XP indicates that a modem is already present.

Can anyone who has encountered the exact same problem offer any advice.

    Thanks dillon

First of all, make sure when you boot up your computer that the modem is already turned on.

Second, if Windows does not recognize your modem properly, download the INF file from USRobotics website (mdmusr01.inf), right-click it and from pop-up menu choose "Install".

Third, if you didn't do so yet, upgrade your modem to V.92 technology (if applicable). Check USRobotics website for the patch. I would also recommend to download and install Control Center, which has many settings for your modem hardly available other way. This is 6 - 8 MB download, depending of the model of your modem.

    kaplinb,

Just out of curiosity, since I've been out of the loop on dial up since I went to DSL some time ago.

    -----------------------
upgrade your modem to V.92 technology (if applicable)
    -----------------------
I was under the impression that V92 was only applicable if BOTH the modem AND the ISP had V92 technology installed. One without the other did nothing to improve service. Then V90 applies.
    Is that what you meant by "if applicable"? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Hello Kaplinb;Viking33

Thanks so much for answering my post, I had actually given up on receiving answer. I noticed that when I didn't turn on the U.S. Robotics 56K v.92, windows really didn't connect with the modem; Kaplinb, thank you so much for confirming my supicsions.

As for the download, yesterday I downloaded the following "usr5686E.inf" and then the 5686 Flasher. Viking, it is my understanding that this download affects the v.92 upgrade.

Concerning the Controller the symantec tech support, advised me not to use the controller, because of unresolved issues with XP. I would agree with the tech support, only because last week I tried to upgrade by using the Control Centre, after I ran the control centre it stated that the upgrade was successful. Never believe anything you read; I found the driver in the a Reinstallbackups folder, and it had yesterday creation date, not last week.

The only thing that threw me off, was when I had to download the usr5686.inf, I saved the actual file, but it was a notepad item. Once I was able to have tech support guide me through the procedure, everything started to make sense concerning the notepad file.

Kaplinb, were did you locate the following, mdmusr01.inf; I couldn't find this download.

Gentleman, thank you so very much for your amazing support.

    regards,
