New Windows Updates messed up my computer (Win XP Pro service pac 1)

I just recovered from a crash of my computer after downloading and installing the new Windows Updates KB828028 and a driver update from Windows Updates which was "security update nVidia driver version 52.16" . When I rebooted to finish the installation my screen would not come back on, all it said in a little white box was " Out of Range " . I tried to boot into "safe" mode and I couldn't do that either...it showed about half a screen of loaded drivers and then just quit. I had to unplug the computer from the wall and then boot with F8 and go to last known good configuration. After it came back to life I did a system restore to before the point where I put the "new updates" on and now all is well again. Has anyone had any similar problems? I think I will let these updates go by this time, or at least until microsoft gets the bugs worked out!

XP Pro sp1
P4 2.4 ghz
768 rambus RAM
nVidia GeForce 4 MX 420
Flat Panel monitor
Dell Diminsion 8200 etc, etc,etc.

Thanks for all comments / advice in advance!

I think there is another thread going where people warned about driver updates in particular. You might prefer to get your video card driver updates only from the manufacturer, rather than through Microsoft, if at all possible.

Edited to add: Sorry about that KB number. It was the one I had just finished downloading. ( But It seems to be working OK )

Are you sure of that KB number? I don't show any 828028, either in my system ( which should be up to date ) or in a KB search for that number.

Also , Jefferson is right about the WInUpdate hassle with Nvidia drivers. Go to the Nvidia site for the latest version numbers and ignore what MS says in the driver updates for Nvidia. By the time MS "approves" them for use, they are out of date. ( I never saw a driver update listed as a security update, just a driver update )

Thanks for your guys prompt replys and advice

jscher2000 Thank you, what you said made sense to me about going to nVidia for any/all driver updates...after all they made it right!?! It seems wierd to have to update it anyway since I had just updated it not more than a month ago when I did a clean install of XP Pro and updated the driver then. I guess that was where my problem was with the " Out of Range " message on my monitor ( although I don't know what "Out of Range" actually means! ) , it must have something to do with my video card because that was where my immediate problem/concern was!

viking33 Thanks for your comments, I am quite sure of the KB number..it is 828028..I just was informed by Microsoft Windows Update ( the automatic update site) that I needed to download and install it ! I went ahead and did a restore point just before downloading it then went ahead and put it on my computer and so far...no problems. My main problem was with the nVidia update so I left that one off. By the way, Microsoft says that the driver update (version 52.16 ) is a Critical Update!?!
I don't care..it messed up my computer big time, so forget it !

The "Out of Range" message does involve your video card. It means that the resolution settings are set too high for the monitor to display. You could fix this by booting into safe mode and changing the display settings to a resolution that is within range. While you're there check the screen refresh setting to make sure it's within range, too. This is a simple fix, although it is unfortunate that you have to deal with it.

While I was not aware that nVidia 52.16 was a critical update, there are other software makers that have security holes in their software. It has been interesting to follow in some of the MS blogs the stories they tell of 3rd party apps cutting corners in their software development, which causes Windows to crash, which is blamed on MS. Perhaps earlier nVidia drivers don't play nice with the latest MS patches, and so MS wants you to update your driver. Don't see anything wrong with that. Just curious what driver are you using now?

Thanks for your comments. My driver is provided by NVIDIA, the driver version is 5.3.0.3 It is dated 11/17/2003 and it is digitally signed by Microsoft Windows Compatible. I don't know why I need a newer one, unless it's like you suggest, something to do with all the MS updates and the ability of the driver being able to "get along" with the new updates and security and all...

My monitor never gave me any problems in the past ( had since Oct 2002 ) just today when I put that "Critical Update" on!
I have the resolution set at 800 x600 , the refresh rate is set at 60 Hertz ( I have a box checked to hide modes that this monitor can't display....my choices are 56, 60, 70, 72, 75 ) Do you think that this is a problem? Anyway, after I did a system restore, I didn't have any problems and my settings were never changed throughout the whole episode...so there you have it!!
What is the problem...must be the nVidia update

Re: New Windows Updates messed up my computer (Win XP Pro service pac 1)

See, there is an example of how up to date the MS site is with driver updates. Nvidia has 5.3.0.3 as the latest signed driver, yet MS shows 5.2.1.6 as the latest.
Stick with the Nvidia driver.

BTW, I noticed that your screen resolution was 60 hertz. That is the same frequency as the power line AC here in the US. That setting tends to produce an annoying "ripple" in the screen background. It would be better to set it at 72 or 75. ( anything over 70 ) It WILL be easier on the eyes, even if you don't see any apparent ripple.

The 'newer' at WU is not newer. 53.03 is the latest release from Nvidia. When you mentioned recovering from a crash if you mean re-build/re-install the resolution and refresh rate are usually set to a very low default as part of the driver installation. You should be able to change to what you want.
