Aargh! Miniscule icons, fonts, etc. (XP Home OEM)

Recently purchased a laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600, 1.4 GHz). My 15-year-old son, quick to press keys and click the mouse in his "I know what I'm doing" attitude, somehow changed the desktop icons and fonts to an absolutely miniscule size. There's no way, even with a magnifying glass, to read them. I've clicked on what I know is Properties in an attempt change appearance and then the size and font of the Windows elements, but after that (being familiar only with Windows 98, 2000, and ME), I'm lost, including trying to find system restore. I've never seen such small windows--what should fill most of the monitor is 1/4 by 1/4 inch, the task bar is a fraction of an inch, etc., etc. Any suggestions?

First rt. click the desktop>Properties>Display Properties Dialogue Box>Settings Tab and check that screen resolution hasn't changed.

Maybe SR is a simple solution. I don't know what happened. Hit the Windows Key +R (hopefully still normal size ), and type "restore" in the run box, and then click on "restrui" and that should bring up System Restore and you can go from there unless you can't see this. Let me know.

I think the kid needs to fix this. Good practice for future mistakes.

Could it be that he got into the BIOS and changed something? Worth looking into. Also, you ought to try booting to SAFE mode (F8 at startup/boot) to see if the boot to Safe mode comes up normally.

Everything is so small that it can't be read. Picture, if you will, a hypen (-) that presumably says "Properties" or "Display Properties," but who knows?

I doubt he got into BIOS. I'll try Safe mode later this afternoon when I get home. In fact, I had thought of that after I made my initial post, but by then it was late and I was thoroughly frustrated. (Overall, not a good day yesterday--also locked my keys in the car.)

Try:
Right_click on a blank space on your desktop
"r"
"Ctrl_TAB" four times
"Left-arrow" 10 or 12 times
"Alt_a"

Where "r" means press the R key, "Ctrl_TAB" means press Ctrl then Tab, "Alt_a" means press Alt then the A key.

And I hope you're making the 15 Y/O watch you as you go through all this. It's great that the "younger generation" has all this super-confidence but toning 'em down can be a tough job.

Thanks, Leif. I certainly will try it later and let you know what happens.

You could always try hypnosis to get him to tell what he did.

Or torture...!

(I would go for the latter...)

BigAl, exactly! My message to him--clear and loud--was to ask questions and/or do research if he doesn't know what he's doing. Of course, the blame is always placed on the computer, not the user.

Torture, yes. For him, it will be restrictions, aka "grounding," in using the computer, television, Play Station, etc.

Leif,

Your suggestion didn't have any effect on the desktop font and icon size, but BigAl's advice to boot into the Safe Mode did work.

Big Al,

Booting into Safe Mode via F8 and then changing the display properties worked. Thanks. By the way, my son did it as I stood over his shoulder. He "may" have learned a lesson. Thanks.

Glad to hear you got it, Dennis. More and more these days, laptops don't like having the resolution changed and I don't understand why. My son had one that couldn't be changed from 1024x768 without similar results to what you had, although not quite as extreme as what you described.
