Windows Patches

I'm new to this, so forgive my naivete, but why is it when I get those security patch warnings telling me Microsoft has created a critical problem, it directs me to a site that says I should pay for the fix??! Doesn't seem ethical to me! Is it legit?

    thanks!

Are you sure that notice came from Microsoft? I have never been asked to pay for any Microsoft fix.

Are you running a version of Windows that has the Messenger Service? This permits strangers to pop up warning messages even if you are not running Internet Explorer. Maybe you can capture a screen shot of one of these pay-to-update come-ons before you visit the site. If it's a Messenger Service prompt, a few searches here and on the XP board will give you directions for getting rid of those.

For genuine Microsoft updates for free, go directly to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

MS always entertains the idea of making their software available and updating it on a subscription basis but currently they do not charge you anything for security hotfixes and other updates to Windows and Windows related software. As far as the security vulnerabilities , you can get email notification of them free via security bullentins and then download directly for a link or choose to go to Windows Update and do this. Links to do this, and to get free notification of security updates with links to them are in Post 343225.

Those are scams that have been around for some time now. While they may LOOK like an official Microsoft notification, THEY ARE NOT !

Microsoft does not send out notices to users. ( unless your are subscribed to their security updates newsletter ) Don't fall for this , particularly if they want you to pay for what are free patches. Just hit the big delete key and go the the MS update site that others have noted above

THANK YOU, ALL YOU GOOD LOOKING MEN. I had a gut slimey feeling that I was on the hook of a scammer. I will go to Microsoft and find their downloads.
