Links in Help don't work - grey box instead

We have Windows 2000 with SP4 installed and IE 5.5. Since installing SP4 we've lost most links in the Windows Help System. Links are displayed as small grey boxes with a dot in the middle.

The MS Knowledge Base (822989) says the solution is to install SP4 !

Could our problem be that we've not installed something ?

Does anyone have the same problem - and a solution ?

Hi Garry,

This problem was caused by the February 2003 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer. Apart from installing SP4 (@129MB), you can fix it via Critical Update 811630.

Many thanks. I've told our technical people but they say we've already installed SP4. My PC says I am using SP4. Is it possible we've left something out ?

Cheers

First I'd run System File Checker. If trhat doesn't fix things, then...I'd read over the suggestions at the site below:

Go to Kelly's A to Z>H>Help and Support and download two automatic regedits.

Also see Line 57 Left Side Restore winhelp32.exe

Consider the other methods of fixing Help and Support here.

Hi Garry,

According to the KB article for Critical Update 811630, the follwing files were updated to the versions indicated below. You might want to check that your's have at least those version #s. If the versions are the same:

The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Date Time Version Size File name
----------------------------------------------------------------------
26-Nov-2002 19:23 5.2.3644.0 10,752 %Windir%Hh.exe
31-Dec-2002 17:27 5.2.3735.1 516,200 %Windir%System32Hhctrl.ocx
31-Dec-2002 17:29 5.2.3644.0 37,888 %Windir%System32Hhsetup.dll
31-Dec-2002 17:29 5.2.3644.0 143,872 %Windir%System32Itircl.dll
31-Dec-2002 17:29 5.2.3644.0 122,368 %Windir%System32Itss.dll

If you've got earlier versions, I'd say your update was incomplete. Did you apply the update from CD or on-line? The 'full' CD (offline/network) version of the update is 129Mb, but the on-line one tends to be much smaller and might leave something out.

Unfortunately, you can't apply Update 811630 after installing SP4 (I tried) unless you roll SP4 back. If you did use the on-line update, refreshing it with the 'full' CD version might fix the problem. Indeed, so too might a refresh over a 'full' update.

I'm not sure about SMBP's suggestions (other than the system file check) - they're aimed at XP, not Win 2000, and don't seem to address the issue with the HTML help files listed above.

Cheers

Re: Links in Help don't work - grey box instead

Many thanks everybody. This has been very helpful.

I don't have administrator rights so, I can't run System File Checker. I've looked at the files suggested by macropod and everything is OK. So, the cause might be somewhere else.

Our W2K desktop is supported by a contractor who says the problem can only be fixed by upgrading to IE6.

Could the problem be our install of IE 5.5 ? We currently have build 5.50.4807.2300.CO with update versions SP2; Q313675; Q832894. The "About " IE dialogue says we have a "customized version" of IE.

Cheers

I'd get with the contracter and the IT people and see if you can update to IE6 or you can find out what IE5.5 updates you need and if they can facilitate running SFC this time. You can get IE 5.5 SP2 or you can get an IE list of Critical Updates. I think that "customized version" of IE is probably referring to a branding either by your contracter or something your own company requested and probably has little to do with this.
