No volume icon in system tray (Windows XP Home Edition SP1)

I just noticed that there is no volume icon in my System Tray. I was so used to seeing it there, that I failed to notice when it wasn't anymore. I extracted a copy of sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP CD and sent it to System32 as I was instructed to do by a Windows tech. Restarted the computer.

Needless to say, that failed to work or I would not be posting here.

Does any one have any further suggestions? I surely would appreciate some as I am fresh out.

I don't have XP Home, so I hope this isn't one of the places where there's a difference - have you opened Control Panel, Sounds app to see if somehow the check mark has gotten un-checked?

Edited to add: I forgot to also say, right-click the Task Bar, Properties to check to see if the volume icon has changed to a hiding status.

After checking Sound and Audio devices properties per Al's suggestion, and making sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked, make sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar Properties. Go to start and log off and log back on, bring up Task Manager>Processes tab>Explorer.exe>End Task>select New Task Button>type in explorer.exe>OK.

    Other measures:

319095: Volume Icon Is Not Displayed in the Notification Area

or put in the XP CD>Run box type in: EXPAND -R X:I386powrprof.dl_ C:WindowsSystem32>then type in the run box regsvr32 stobject.dll

This assumes that you have XP installed in the Windows folder on C and that you're using an installed version of XP, not a "recovery CD."

Also Line 53 Right Column: Show Past Items in Notification Area

Yes, I did that and when I tried to click on it, that's when I got the error message. I'm very sorry,... I forgot to post back that the problem's been solved. I retreived a corrupted sound file (for the life of me, I can't recall it's name. It was something like sndvol.exe). Never-the-less, it's fixed and I apoligize again.

I never received this post in an e-mail. I have printed your solution and will keep it on file just in case.

I thank you and as I just posted in reply to someone else, the problem's no longer a problem. It's been FIXED.
