    Hung Symantec Antivirus (XP)

When I upgraded from Win98 to XP about a year ago, I didn't remove Symantec Antivirus Professional Edition before running the upgrade. After the upgrade, SAPE wouldn't run, so I went to the remove programs dialog and tried to remove it. The resulting error message tells me there's no install log, so it can't be removed. Until I remove it, I can't install a working copy. Friends (?) tell me I have to burn the machine down and start over to get it off. My old HP printer driver is hung the same way. Is there any way to avoid a full meltdown?

    Pat,

Symantec has an AV removal utility called Rnav2003, that you can download. It supposedly removes all traces of NAV from your system. If that doesn't do it, then I would say go to Regedit and search for all instances of Symantec or Norton and delete them.

You can get the utility at REMOVE NAV

Thanks. It looks like an excellent utility, but the remove file does not work with Corporate Edition, which was on my machine. However, I found a link elsewhere on the symantec site to a manual uninstall procedure which did work. It involved removing about 50 instances of one key, which was tedious, but in the end, I got it all off the computer and was able to install the program now that the ghosts of Symantec past have been expunged.

Glad to see you are back in business, Pat.
I know what you mean about the regedit method. I did that once myself and was amazed just how many instances there were of Norton, etc. <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>
