Pasting a selection in Word from another applicati (Word 2002)

Goodmorning,

One of my users has the following problem:
She opens several documents in Word.
At any given time she's working in the third document (for example).
Then she switches to another application (doesn't matter which one), she makes a selection, copies this and switches back to her Word document.
The weird part is that she doesn't always come back in the last active document but random in another one.
How's this possible?

I really would like to hear about this, so many thanks in advance!
Daphne

Hello Daphne,

What method does she use to switch between applications? Alt+Tab, or the task bar, or something else?

Hello Hans,

She's not in right now, but I beleive she uses the taskbar... She's not one of my stupid users (if you catch my drift... ).

Grtz,

If she has "Windows in task bar" ("Vensters in taakbalk") ON in Tools | Options..., she will have a separate button in the task bar for each document, or if there are too many buttons to display, a single Word button that acts as a popup list. So it is up to her to click the correct button.

If "Windows in task bar" is OFF, there will be only one Word button in the task bar, and in my experience this always activates the document that was last active.

Okay.. she's in... the option you've said to check, was checked. I'm at a loss...

I've asked her how she switches between documents.
She does the following:
- She opens a couple of documents during the day in Word.
- When working on for example document 4 she want to insert an address from another application.
- She opens this application via Start, Programs.
This application opens in a smaller window so she still can see her Word document at the background.
- When she wants to switch back to Word just by clicking in the document she sees at the background, she doesn't automatically switches back to the document she's had active, but to a random other one.

When she selects the document via the taskbar at the bottom she doesn't have this problem, but that's a step too much for her... because she didn't have to do this before...

Is this a typical XP thing?

I hope you can understand what I've tried to explain!

Many thanks again!

Okay, many thanks for searching as well! I've send the answer to her, so I'm very curious to see her reaction .

Re: Pasting a selection in Word from another applicati (Word 2002)

Word 2002 (XP) doesn't behave that way for me; if I click in the Word window, the active document comes up. I have searched the Knowledge Base and the newsgroups and I can't find any mention of this problem, so I'm stumped. I fear that your colleague will have to use the task bar or Alt+Tab to switch to the correct document.

The only thing that I can think of is that when she starts her application, the focus somehow shifts first to another document. Either the document that she sees in the background is NOT the one she thought or this application somehow focuses on another document. You might check Step 3 of <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> to see if an add-in from this application is changing the focus.
Cheers,

YEAH! The combination of throwing away a couple of tempfiles and the normal.dot (for the hundreth time) did it... I feel like a real blond!
But I'm very happy!!!!

Many many thanks!
