MSACCESS.EXE getting stuck in task manager (2002 (10.2616.2625))

    Hi all,
I am having a slight problem where after I close access the MSACCESS.EXE is still in the task manager. I have to go into the task manager and end the MSACCESS.EXE thread to get access to open for a second time. The operating system is XP Pro. Please help as this is really becoming a bother. Thanks all.

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Does this happen after you have used a particular database, or does it always happen when you quit Access?

Are you running your application on a network? This happens to me quite alot, however, the issue is not with access but with our network as the databases close fine if I run them outside of the network environment on a standalone machine.

The Database is sitting on a server but the ACCESS app is local. Other stations don't seem to have this problem looking at the database just mine. I have tried different versions of ACCESS and already tried re-installing this copy a few times. It works fine for a couple of days and then.....

    Thanks for the greeting.

This usually happens after I close any database. Now I am into the habit of running the task manager right after I close a database to see if MSACCESS.EXE was released or not. Could it have something to do with the fact that i am now compacting the database on close. I have tried turning the setting on/off but it has no effect.

A couple of possibilities:<UL><LI>When Access closes, if you have attached Access tables on the server, then it tries to check and see if there is anybody else using the back-end, and if not, it deletes the .LDB file for the back-end database. If your terminal is experiencing some network problems, that could certainly cause it to hang trying to check the lock file.<LI>Another thing that could be going on is that the back-end database is set to compact on close, and Access may be having trouble trying to determine if anyone else has an entry in the .LDB file - if it found there wasn't then it would try to compact the back-end. Again, network problems could cause Access to appear to hang.<LI>It is also fairly common to have some rouge code running, waiting for you to respond to a message box that you can't see, or to some form event that is looping waiting for some other event to occur. If your front-end is has some very complex forms this is more likely to occur. This seems less likely in your case however, as other users don't seem to be having the same problem.[/list]Good luck chasing things down.

I don't think Compact on Close has anything to do with it.

Do you have VBA code that you use in all your databases? There are some issues with code that may cause the problem you describe. One of them is opening a recordset in code and not closing it properly. Another one is testing a check box like this:

    If Me.chkMyCheckBox Then ' wrong

    instead of

    If Me.chkMyCheckBox = True Then ' right

On the other hand, if something like this is the cause, I would expect the problem to occur on all computers that open these databases. I am curious to know if the problem occurs if you open and quit a blank database, or a database without VBA code.

I have not done much in VB as of yet...and the problem happens on a new blank database as well...

Thanks i will give that a try and look at the network.. but I dont think that this is the problem as I have tried local Databases and have disconnected from the network (pulled the cable) and I still get the problem sometimes.

Do you have any add-ins loaded (see Tools | Add-Ins...)?

Well, thats good timing! I have recently had the same problem, Access wont close when i close my databse! This has happened since I got my head around recordsets in VB and realized I havent been closing any of them!

how do you do that? is it just a:

    rst.Close

    ?
    Thanks,

    pmatz

In fact, you should close the recordset and set the object to Nothing; this will free the memory used by the object.

' Close the connection to the underlying data
    rst.Close
    ' And release the memory
    Set rst = Nothing

    If I have also done

    Dim db as database
    Set db = Currentdb

    then should i do

    db.Close
    Set db = Nothing

    ?
    Thanks,

You can't close the current database this way, so you don't need db.Close. Keep the Set db = Nothing. If you had opened another database, as in

    Set db = OpenDatabase("C:AccessOther.mdb")

    you would need db.Close.
