Navigation 'hangs' temporarily (IE 6 SP1)

This may not be the right place to post this but not knowing the problem, I'm not sure where to post. It's a 'net surfing problem so I'll start here.

I use dialup service and am happy with my ISP but for one problem and I don't know if it is related to the ISP's service, the phone lines, my computer, or what. Our office IT (sort of) guy didn't seem to have any suggestions either. I have a Pentium 233 with 160MB RAM. The hard drive was reformatted and reloaded from scratch recently for other reasons and there was no change in this problem.

Often when surfing the 'net, I will attempt to go to another site, page, link, etc. and nothing happens. The "two computers" icon in the system tray that should be blinking green lights to show data transmission just sits there dark - nothing transmits or receives - for ten or fifteen seconds sometimes longer. Then all of a sudden it starts flashing again and the new page appears.

Yeah, I know the easy solution is to switch to high speed, but my low cost dialup package covers all the time I need (they don't charge when sometimes I go a bit over my limit) and it fits my economical budget (ok, cheap!)

I have DSL & this sometimes happens to me. Nothing appears to be happening except the bar in the status bar goes goes back & forth or the upper right IE icon changes. Depending upon the internet traffic & the site, I think this is normal. I hope it is or I'm paying a lot for nothing. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Other times, I get to the same site right away.

I have DSL also, but I think it is a "net" problem that is dependent on traffic conditions, time, users and website locations. It may be more noticeable on a dialup connection than DSL or Cable. Just the nature of the beast. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

Also remember that the speed is controlled by the slowest of the two ends. If you are on a T3 connection and the web site you are visiting on a 56K modem, your down load of the site will be at 56 K. Now if the 56K modem is on a very dirty line it may never get up to 56K, and may even not even be up to 9K.

Before cable I was lucky to get 22K with a 56K modem, the lines in this area were so dirty and they just may still be that way, as we can NOT get DSL but I will not give up my cable for DSL.

If the page code requires loading the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) also known as the Virtual Machine, there often will be a pause until that is loaded before the page can be displayed. On a 2GHz machine this pause might be only 5 seconds, but on an older machine like yours, it could be quite lengthy. As long as IE remains in memory, the same site should not cause the same problem, and other sites that use Java should load normally, but if you close IE and go back to that site, you should get the same behavior. Something to test the next time...

    Hi Dave:
I don't want to hijack this thread, but why do you prefer cable to DSL...or is it just in your area?

    Subjective rating Great

    From http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/Checkup.php

Thanks, Dave. Not bad. With ADSL, I get:

    <table border=1><td valign=top></td><td valign=top>Yours</td><td valign=top>Mine</td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top>From BandwithPlace</td><td valign=top>From BandwithPlace</td><td valign=top>Speed</td><td valign=top>2 megabits per second</td><td valign=top>1.2 megabits per second</td><td valign=top>Communications</td><td valign=top>2 megabits per second</td><td valign=top>1.2 megabits per second</td><td valign=top>Storage</td><td valign=top>249.2 kilobytes per second</td><td valign=top>142.7 kilobytes per second</td><td valign=top>1MB file download</td><td valign=top>4.1 seconds</td><td valign=top>7.2 seconds</td><td valign=top>Subjective rating</td><td valign=top>Great</td><td valign=top>Good</td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top>From YourSpeed</td><td valign=top>From YourSpeed</td><td valign=top>Throughput (2)</td><td valign=top>98689 Bps</td><td valign=top>60335 Bps</td><td valign=top>bytes per second</td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top>Throughput</td><td valign=top>790 kbps</td><td valign=top>483 kbps</td><td valign=top>kilobits per second</td><td valign=top></td><td valign=top></td></table>

    Still, I think I'll look into cable. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Some areas you can pay more for a faster speed with DSL. I have not been watching the rates but some people are paying almost as much as we are for their DSL
