DVD Video recorders

OK Loungers - any early adopters out there?

At the moment we have a "Tivo like" (Satellite decoder with build in hard drive to record) box attached to our TV and attached to it is a VCR. Since we are getting mostly British broadcast programmes our VCR has had to be able to record PAL-I as well as the PAL-H used here in . I spent a LOT of time finding a VCR that will record both H/I versions and found a Toshiba that did so.

Of course the VCR is now kaput - and they want CHF200, or more ($130/

Re: DVD Video recorders

I have withdrawn from this market for the time being as I fronted about the only stero/video store I trust completely to be advised to wait until the end of year or until the format war ends. "Which ever comes last". This may not be what you want to hear, but it is the best advise I have access to.

Re: DVD Video recorders

Thanks Granville,
Much similar to what I have heard, but apparently the format wars haven't bothered the manufactures much. Most DVD recorder/players can deal with multiple formats DVD-RAM, -R +R etc on a single box.

Oh well my challenge, if I don't pop down CHF200 to fix the 3 year old VCR, is to go to a DVD recorder and (please help me if I am wrong here) I can burn a DVD in an MPEG format - and not have to worry about PAL - I (UK) and PAL - B/G (Switzerland - Not H as mentioned in my original post).

Whats on the market is pretty expensive at the moment, and is likely to come down in price - I hope. Thanks for your comments. Look forward to any other loungers (well any other than John Grey) view on this!

Bowlie

I don't think there's a John Grey actually in this Lounge!

(Don't suppose Apple Macs can verify names...!)
