    Automatic accents (Word 2000 9.0.6926 SP3)

If I type a comma or quotation mark followed by the letter e or the letter u (and probably other vowels as well), I get the e or u with an accent or an umlaut (double dot on top). Is there a way to turn this feature on and off? I have a similar system where I need to enable this feature.

More importantly, is there a really comprehensive book about Word where I can read and learn about this sort of detailed information?
