    network card (win Xp)

please help. I had to reinstall win xp and now it's not recognizing my network card. I'm using a Dell Dimension 4600 with built in intel network card. How can I get the computer to recognize the nic? What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Did you reinstall Windows XP from a Dell supplied recovery disk?

If this is a generic installation of Windows XP then you will need to get all the Dell drivers from somewhere, either a CD, or the Dell web site

If you visit the Device Manager (Start button>Settings>Control Panels>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager), is there a question mark or exclamation mark on your network interface? If so, it might be a "plug-and-play" error in detecting the hardware. I forget actually, how you clear Windows' memory so that it can redetect the hardware, but I'm sure someone can indicate how and whether that might help.

I actually replaced the hard drive and use a new copy of win xp pro. When I click on properties under My Computer--- there are only 2 tabs--"General" and "Shortcut" I can't even get to Device Manager... I do have some recovery disks from the original XP Home edition. I think I'm gonna format the drive and start over.... Something isn't right... I'll let you know--I'll probably need more help. Thanks

You are going to need to use the Dell CDs or down load ALL of the Dell drivers for that model.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You can also get to device manager by going to Start>Run and typing devmgmt.msc >OK

If you see a NIC under network adapters, you can uninstall it and then click on scan for new hardware. Or reboot after uninstalling the NIC to let Windows reinstall it.

Also make sure the on board NIC is enabled in the BIOS settings, if you see that Device Manager isn't seeing the NIC at all.
