    IE6 is hidden !

When I start Internet Explorer, the connection dialog comes up, but IE itself is invisible. Any ideas ?
This has only started recently - I've checked for viruses, spyware, trojans etc and done "repair IE".
Bizarrely, if I click "Work offline", the dialog disappears and comes back again, and if I click "Work offline" a second time then IE appears as normal, and I can use it OK
    Thanks for any help.

What happens if you go through the steps in the Internet Connection Wizard? Does IE then show its face?

In XP, and I imagine 98, if you go to the C:ProgramFilesInternet Explorer folder I find IE and the Connection Wizard in there. You could shortcut or rightclick copy that and put it where you want it I would think.

But how does that answer the question of whether or not IE appears onscreen? Accessing the program does not seem to be the issue here.

Sorry to be so long in replying - if I choose "connect" from the dialog, does eventually appear. In the period when its invisible it does not show up in the running processes list . . . .

    Hi Martin:
Then, it sounds like it is just slow in loading. In IE or Control Panel/Internet Options, go to Connection tab/ & make sure "Perform security check before dialing" is UNchecked. The IE repair puts a checkmark there. You might also check:
Connections/LAN/ & UNcheck the proxy checkmark, if checked
    Check Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Automatically detect settings

The IE repair also may add duplicate shortcuts. I always remove
IE shortcut from desktop, Quick Launch, & StartMenu/Programs. Must remove Create Shortcut from SendTo menu & Show Desktop from Quick Launch.

    Hope this helps,

If slow loading is the cause, it might also be worth checking to see if anything has "jumped on IE's back". Certain spyware etc. install as BHOs (Browser Helper Objects) and can chew a lot of resources loading up alongside IE. I think AdAware and Spybot S&D can nail such parasites.

    Re: IE6 is hidden !

I don't know from the OP exactly if the issues is that the browser runs sometimes, and doesn't others or IE can't be found. I'm not sure what "appears on screen" means. Reading the thread three more times, it appears that IE has a problem loading or is corrupted in some circumstances, and needs fixing. In that case, I guess Add/Remove, running System File Checker, or using one of the Repair IE methods might be helpful. Post Post 338243 contains a number of methods to repair IE 6.

    Martin--

Why not try repairing IE6 so it will run consistently if that's the problem?

    Cured !
I ran all the checks and changed the settings as advised.
In the end it was add/remove programs . . . IE repair that did it. SFC did not pick up anything as far as I could see.
    Many thanks to all.
