    Big first letter (2002-sp2)

I want to create a document with a big first letter, not drop capped. My problem is that this seems to create a larger space between the first line and the rest of the lines in the paragraph. How do I overcome that?
    Thanks

    Hi Terry:
I suppose you could show the Drawing toolbar & then click on Word Art. You might be able to insert a letter the way you want.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi Phil,
That fixes the line spacing problem. Now how do I choose a word art syle that doesn't distort the letter?
    Thanks

You may want to look at the line spacing option. In Word97 it's Format ....Paragraph......Indent and Spacing tab........Line Spacing.
I hope it's similar in Word2002. I use it for this exact purpose, to keep a uniform space between lines where I have to mix font sizes. ...J. Till

    Re: Big first letter (2002-sp2)

That's how I started out. I highlighted everything and selected 1.5 line spacing. My problem was it picked up the size of the first letter, which is enormous, and made the first line 1.5 times the size of that letter. The word art trick solves the line spacing dilemma but distorts the shape of the letter.

I think I got it. I chose a word art style with the letters going vertically, but it's only one letter, so there is no distortion. I'm unfrustrated !
    Thanks, Phil and Jill

    Hi Terry:
I think you misunderstood Jill. Jill said to pick an exact line size, not a multiple of single. e.g. pick exactly & then for 12 point text, pick 14 pt.

I just tried that. It fixes the line spacing problem but cuts off the top of the big first letter, for some reason.

If you don't want any fancy text distortion, why not use a text box instead and just wrap the text around that.
