    Print Log? (Win 2k)

Is there a way to have Windows log what I printed recently, and from which applications?

I don't know of a way (maybe others do?) and would therefore suggest Googling for a third-party program, whose name probably contains the words "print" and "manager". Such a solution is likely to be expensive, and intended for company use.

(I tested this in XP and expect the same for W2K)

Open your Printers folder (Start > Settings > Printers...)
File > Server Properties > Advanced...
And select Log Spooler information events.

You will then have an entry in your event viewer for every print job. Not ideal as it logs everything - including deleting the spooled file! - but may be a solution. If you are printing a lot, you may want to increase the size of the event viewer log, or get it to overwrite as needed.

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

I tried this, and then I tried printing. I didn't see anything getting written to the event log at the time I printed. Do I need to reboot before this setting takes effect?

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

All I got was a popup message linked to the system tray, which told me about the print job. Nothing in the Application or System Event Logs (WinXP Pro).

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

OK - I'll check on W2K in the morning, otherwise....

I just tried again at home - again XP Pro.
And again it worked - two events logged in the System log in Event Viewer.
(I am currently running with Admin rights, mind.....?)

    Leif

That's similar to what I got too -- but as the popup/tool tip. There's nothing in my System Event Log.

I will move two computers left and try on Windows 2000 once I've got rid of this morning's crop of spam...

W2K tested and works as XP.
(XP seems to miscalculate the number of pages printed though - initial investigations show it being double the true number plus 1 <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> )

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

    Bizarre.

I've tried on my W2K box and get nothing at all, not even the tool-tip message! Just an event log entry saying that print drivers have been updated.

All of my "printers" are networked printers - are yours "local"?

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

Of course they are local - I can't expect all my staff to have to get up and WALK to get their printouts!!! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

That's it - printing to a local printer adds an entry in the event log, printing to a network printer gives me the little tool-tip.

    Saturn,
It looks like the event viewer only logs printing to a local printer. If it is local, you may need to hit F5 to refresh the log.

    Leif

I would have expected the print server to have the print dataset entries in its Event Log for networked printers, but not there either!

Wish our company could afford to give each employee an enormously-expensive colour laser printer each! (I must be in the wrong job...)

    Re: Print Log? (Win 2k)

    They've only got mono's, I'm afraid. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
But how did you know I have a colour laser at work? - inkjet shown above is at home. If you can tell me remotely which make and model I have, you definitely *are* in the wrong job....
