Re: beware the google bar (ie6)

I listened to Microsoft do an excellent job yesterday of what you stated very succinctly. Updates are just not going to be perfect for all users of course. You should have a choice and you do. It's easy to uninstall that toolbar. But Jefferson, I cannot find any evidence that the toolbar alone shut down any browser. There's a plethora of info [i]that other add-ins create instability when mixed with the Google toolbar.[i] I don't see any real qualitative difference from its autoupdate and Symantec's or Microsoft's or anyone elses. I've had the toolbar since it began.

i rec'd this from google today:

Thank you for taking the time to report this problem and we apologize for the inconvenience it has caused. Our Toolbar Engineering Team made some changes recently that will resolve this problem. However, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the toolbar with the steps below:

    1. Select 'Settings' from the Windows 'Start' menu.
    2. Click on 'Control Panel' and then 'Add or Remove Programs.'
    3. Select 'Google Toolbar for IE' and click the 'Remove' button.

Once the toolbar is uninstalled, please close all IE windows. Then, reinstall the Google Toolbar by visiting http://toolbar.google.com.

You should no longer experience any difficulties with your Internet Explorer connection.

We appreciate your feedback on this update and will keep it in mind as we work to improve.

    Regards,
    The Google Team

apparently they didn't read my email very carefully, or perhaps they can't conceive that someone wouldn't have the google bar installed. as for me, as long as they continue to insist on auto update i won't be installing the google bar again. it is asking for problems. i had it since it came out and it worked fine, until it didn't. and you will never know a problem is being caused by google, since you don't know when they update.

smpb: froogle.google, etc can be made easily available by going to the froogle.google page (seems that all the specialty searches have there own page) and dragging the icon to the IE links bar. it's just a fast and the same number of clicks as using the bar.

Exactly. One user's or a hundred users' good experiences can't tell you whether an update will wreck the next computer because it has an untested or unexpected configuration. So stop trying so hard. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
