Strange Browsing Problem (Win XP Pro SP1)

Recently the following occurred. (I have not recently installed any new software on the computer)

I dial into the Internet via an external USB 56K modem. I connect to the ISP with no problem at as speed on average 46.6 kbps.

I cannot however browse the Internet or download my email. It just times out. I cannot even ping the web sites successfully.
I do not have a firewall installed. My anti-virus software is AVG.
I have reinstalled the modem drivers, reset TCPIP.
I have deleted my dial ups and recreated them from fresh.
I have no DNS setting as they are automatic. I have rebooted many times.
The techies at my ISP have not been able to find the problem and have tried all the normal things.

Any and All ideas are welcome.

    Thanks

Although it would have nothing to do with e-mail, there's a thread on the Internet Explorer board about a problem some people are having with a Valentine's Day update to the Google toolbar. If you have that bar, visit the IE board to read about this issue, and see if disabling the bar makes any difference.

I know this is an old post, so I guess you have an answer, but I came across exactly the same problem the first time I used XP...It might be worth posting for other Woodies users (and it
