Copying Win 3.1 files to Win XP Home computer (Win XP Home & Win 3.1)

(Edited by eharley57 on 20-Feb-04 04:16. )
Trying to move files from old laptop (Windows 3.1) to desktop (Windows XP Home). When files are moved from laptop to floppy, files are visible; but when floppy is put into desktop, Explorer does not list files. Have even used command prompt on desktop to view files, but there are no files to be seen. Funny thing is when checking properties of floppy on desktop, it shows that something is on the floppy (used space equals space used by files that can't be seen). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Explorer is set up to show hidden files and folders.

Try formatting the disk with the XP system and then copying to floppy. Floppy drives frequently get mis-aligned and can't be read from one drive to the next.

From a command prompt (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) type:
    dir a:
    [Return]
    and see what is displayed.

I don't have the Home version, so I don't know if this is there. Try right-clicking the Task Bar, Properties, Start Menu, Customize, Advanced. See if the drag-and-drop checkbox is marked.

If none of the other suggestions work try attaching the files to one or more e-mails (depending on ISP limits) to yourself.
