    pivot tables (XP)

I have a master spreadsheet that the secondary sort is in date order. When I transfer the data to a pivot table, the date field is not sorted correctly. It is sorted numerically instead of in date order. For instance, 1/1/04 comes before 12/2/04, and 2/11/04 comes before 2/9/04. What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to correct this?

My speculation is that the "dates" are not dates but text that looks like dates.

If you format the date cells to "general" are they numbers (about 38,000) or do they still look like dates? If they still look like dates they are text and not numbers.

You can highlight them, select data text-to-columns , delimited <finish>
    and it should convert them.
