Here are some links from John Walkenbach's site.

You can also search the WOPR excel board under the term password or even password cracker as this is been discussed multiple times.

Re: lost macro password (2000 SR-1)

Thanks for the links. I'm currently trawling through them to find something which can solve my problem.

However, I also have another idea:- one of the programs I downloaded (a trial version of VBA Key) gave me the first 2 letters of the password, but I still couldn't figure out the correct password even though I know what it should be. I have a strong suspicion that I used a special character at the end of the password (i.e. ALT+4digits) in order to make it stronger, but I would have done this in Excel 97. I have already seen that when File-Open protection is used in Excel 97 using special characters, it is impossible to open the file in Excel 2000 unless you go back to 97, take out the special character and try again. Would the same apply to VBA passwords? I have tried the password in Excel 2000 with the special character on the end and I am 99% sure it is the correct password, but it doesn't work. Do you think it's worth me opening the file in 97 (I would have to find a machine with it still on) and taking out the special character or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I don't know enough about the password algorithms to know the answers. Perhaps one of the other excel-experts will know. I can not even test the hypothesis since I only have XL97 and not access to XL2000. Perhaps someone with both could test it and see if it is a valid assumption.

If you have access to XL97 on another computer, You might give it a try, you have nothing to lose (maybe some time) and everything to gain if it works. If you do the experiment, please post back with the results so that others might benefit from the knowledge.

The password that the full version of VBAkey gives is not neccessarily the same as the password YOU assigned BUT it WILL work.

Re: lost macro password (2000 SR-1)

Well, I would have liked to have known the full answer too, but in the end I used a password cracker which simply removed the password altogether via a 'backdoor' (Elcomsoft's Advanced Office XP Password Recovery Pro).

It seems the answer to the mystery will never be solved unless someone does a test using 97 and 2000 as you say. I don't know anyone who is still running 97 so I don't have easy access to it.

    Hi,

I managed to open that file successfully, but can we try the experiment again using Alt+0255 as that is a code which XL2K seems to reject.

    Thanks,
