How do you customize Favorites to...

Now that Internet Explorer lets me change the order of my Favorites from strictly Alphabetically to Arbitrarily (IE 5.5), I would like to Customize my Favorites to more closely resemble my elaborate settings in Netscape 4.x. Specifically, I would like to:

1) Set a Folder as the Toolbar Folder (which lets it act sort of like a Menu bar with its own drop down URLs and sub-menus)

and

2) Add Separators (vertical bars) between different Favorites to Help organize my large lists.

Any hints (including any additional programs I might need) would be greatly appreciated.

Depends what Operating System you're using. Win 98/ME/2000 will let you re-arrange using click-and-drag, as will NT4 and Win 95 if you have installed the dreaded Desktop Update.

If you're using NT4, for example, you can add a folder to WINNTPROFILES%USERNAME%FAVORITESLINKS. I'm sure there is something similar with other OS's.

Not sure about separators. Is that a Netscape-only thing?

Thanks for the response. I don't think I'm being clear with what I'm really after.

In Netscape I have my Bookmarks set up so that they form a menu bar along the top of the page. When I click on any of these "menu items" a list of bookmarks drops down below. Some are actual URLs, others are more "sub-menus" with their own sorted URLs. In addition I can use separators (just like you see in IE's own menus separating the "Select All" command in the "Edit" menu) and custom sorting to keep things tidy. This level of customization is what I'm after.

I'm pretty sure Explorer won't do this "out of the box", but I was wondering whether an add-on program exists that would help simulate these features?

IE has the "Links" tool bar, you can make subfolders the that folder of the Favorites and add the different sites to these new folders. This SHOULD work, but MAY NOT.

Thanks again for your help. LINKS does sort-of-work, but it ignores the order of the "child folders" (they're always listed alphabetically ). Oh well, in the meantime my Win98 computer decided to kill itself (complete re-install on a new hard drive) so that has kept me busy along with my regular work! When I get a chance, I'm going to see what's available in the shareware world, and if I don't find anything, I might even whip up something myself ! I'll post to this thread again in a few weeks.

To get around the "(they're always listed alphabetically )", I just start the folder name with a number and this will sort by the numbers. Just add the lowest number in the folders that you want listed first.

You can shift the positions of the links items without renaming them as well... just click and drag the item where you want it.

Re: How do you customize Favorites to...

As mentioned previously, that doesn't seem to work for links displayed inside the "Links Toolbar", it only seems to work on the Favorites menu.

Great Idea! Unfortunately not really practical when you have hundreds of Links in almost a hundred folders.

I'm very interested to read all this correspondence about Customising Favorites. I use IE 5, and Win 2000 Professional - and just want to get them all listed Alphabetically.
Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

"and just want to get them all listed Alphabetically", go to the menu open Favorites, right click in any open area, and select "Sort by Name". This will sort the menu listing. To have the Favorites pane to display this resort, close the favorites pane, close IE and reopen IE and then the Favorites pane. They now SHOULD be sorted by name.

Re: How do you customize Favorites to...

Thanks Dave for your help. It took me a while to work it out, and I have now prepared the following text for my friends who might have the same problem.

Would it be worthwhile posting this to the Woody's Lounge Favorites site?

Regards,

Paul Garratt

I have tried to find a way to achieve this for months, and just found the answer.

I'll share it in case you have also been searching. I use Windows 2000 Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, and I'm sure the same procedure will work in your versions.

PROBLEM:
When we add a new favorite web site, it is included at the BOTTOM of the list, so after a time there is a mishmash of titles. To sort them alphabetically:

Open Internet Explorer
Go to "Favorites" on the top line, and single click. This will give a truncated list of your favorites
Right Click somewhere to the right of any of the listed sites, then select "Sort by Name" and BINGO. It's done.

If you want to place any particular sites at TOP of your list, right click that particular Favorit, select Rename, and type "1 title".

Repeat the Sort by Favorite the name process above, and you will see all items with 1 in front will be listed before the Alpha sequence. Good eh!

Hope it works for you.
