    IE5.x +: Favicon not being persistent

    When an Internet Explorer 5 user bookmarks your web page, Explorer searches for a special icon with the name "favicon.ico" in the root folder of your site. If it finds one, it replaces the default Microsoft icon with your special little icon next to your name in the favorites menu and in the location bar. If you want a different icon associated with special pages, you can use the LINK tag on those pages like this:
    <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="mypage.ico">

    My question is, why aren't these icons very persistent? Mine will stay there for a few browsing sessions, but after a while they disappear again. The only way to get them back is to delete the shortcuts and re-create them. Is there some kind of icon cache (other than the shell icon cache) that keeps getting cleared out?

    Favicons are lost when you delete your Temporary Internet Files. There is a downloadable, free program that will preserve them called FavOrg v1.2. You can find it at:

    Hope this helps!

    Ooohhh.... new toy! Thanks, Marty! Although I prefer NS at home (not just for the reason saexpress mentioned, but that is one), I'm forced to use IE at work.

    Excellent resource! Thanks. <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>

    BTW - If any spies from Microsoft are reading, this would be a good idea to incorporate into IE6!
