Viewing Word docs posted on Web (IE 6/Word 2000)

Not sure if this is the correct place to post or not, but here goes ----

Using IE 6 and Word 2000 - when attempting to view Word docs posted on the web, all that will display is the frame and the red X in the corner. What would cause that to happen?

I assume your Word documents consist of pictures. This is a recurring problem in IE & there seems to be various causes & solutions. Take a look at the threads surrounding <post#=257173>post 257173</post#>, <post#=221257>post 221257</post#>, <post#=273012>post 273012</post#>, & <!mskb=307239>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 307239<!/mskb>.

If they don't solve your problem, just search the IE forum for Red X.
    Cheers,

The Word plug-in is an ActiveX control. If you disable ActiveX controls from running in the Internet Zone, you should get the Red X. Of course, the same thing should happen with PDFs in the browser, so if PDFs in the browser work fine, perhaps there is another issue. If you open PDFs in stand-alone Acrobat Reader, and would like to launch Word documents in stand-alone Word, you can change Word's behavior in Windows Explorer's File Types dialog. Uncheck the "Browse in same window" checkbox for the DOC file type. (It's not the one marked in red in this picture, but no time to make a new picture!)

Apologies - I just rechecked the issue. What actually displays is the image placeholder (the little square, circle and triangle) in the upper left corner. This only happens with Word documents. We discovered the issue for this user because he cannot view Word docs posted to our Intranet - we use Sharepoint. The issue then expanded to all Word docs posted anywhere on the web when we tested other sites.

WIll give the "Browse in same window" trick a shot. Thanks for your assistance.

I am having the same problem opening word documents in IE. Neither of these suggestions worked for me. Did you find one that worked on your station?

    Thanks.

    Two questions:

    (1) What is your "Browse in same window" setting (checked or cleared)?
    (2) Are you using the new "more secure" Internet Explorer 6 that comes as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2? (And did you notice this after installing SP2?)
