Copy 'n paste from HTML (XP)

I subscribe to several newsletters, and from time to time I copy the text from the email message and paste it into a Word document. I usually have no problem with the formatting, but on rare occasions I run into some bizarre behavior.

For example, today I copied some text that showed up with HTML formatting in Word. I selected the first line and changed its formatting to Title. That's supposed to center the text, but this time the centerpoint is somewhere I can't seem to locate. I clicked the Show/Hide button, and it's set to show absolutely everything, but I can't see any tabs or indentations. The ruler is visible, and my margins correctly display as 1" left and right. The centerpoint should therefore be at the 3-1/4" point, but this line of text is clearly marching to a different drummer. The text ignores my right margin and runs out an inch or more past the margin!

I tried Contol + Q to cancel all the formatting. I hit Control + A and made everything Normal, but nothing works. I also tried copying just the text (not the paragraph mark!) and pasting into a new blank document. This approach made a difference, but the line still won't center. What the heck is going on?

    Hi Lucas:
There may also be some manual formatting, so you should select all & press Ctrl+Spacebar. Have you tried copy & Edit/Paste Special/Unformatted? If the document doesn't contain sensitive information, why don't you post it here?

Well, Phil, I just now tried your suggestions. I tried Edit/Paste Special/Unformatted. I tried selecting all and then Ctrl+A. Nothing works. This one has me stumped! I hesitate to post it

Phil, I just discovered what might be the cause of this little phenomenon. (Woody might like this one!) OK...I do use Word as my email editor, which I know Woody doesn't recommend. But anyway, I closed all instances of Word, to include the email message from which I'd copied the text. Then I restarted Word, called up the Office Clipboard and pasted the text. Then I changed the formatting of the first line to Title and...you guessed it

The Save As Template and then New gets rid of the saved paths history, but the other metadata (e.g., document properties) will survive. It's a never ending struggle!

Glad it worked out for you. In the future, if you have to post something sensitive, one thing you can do is make a copy & then it run a Find/Replace on individual letters, replacing them all with x. Then save it as a template & create a new document based on that template. That should get rid of all the metadata (got that one from Jefferson). Just make sure you don't have Fast Saves checked. Correction. It only gets rid of the history. See Jefferson's post below

    Thanks, Jefferson. Typing faster than I'm thinking tonight. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
