Headers/footers & page numbering (Office XP Word)

When preparing documents I often number the pages in the format page 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 etc. To do this I have used the header or footer box. I click on the icon for page number in the box, insert the slash, then click on the icon for number of pages.
The appropriate page numbering appears(in greyed format) in my electronic document, in the header or footer box, on-screen in the page layout view. However, when I print that document the numbering on the hard copy appears in the form of 1/1, 2/2, 3/3. The electronic document still reads 1/3, 2/3, 3/3.
This has only started happening recently, and I have no idea why or how to fix it.

There was a bug in earlier versions of Word that caused this, but I thought it was fixed in Word 2002.

If you use print preview first, perhaps that will refresh the page count? It's difficult to think of any other way to intervene in the process.

I thought it was fixed also. According to Page XofY on the MVP site, you need to get the latest update. However, since this just started happening, did you install any add-ins or start using Word as an email editor. Does it happen with all documents (it may just be that this document is corrupted)?

If all else fails, try to track it down using the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Cheers,

Sometimes I wonder whether compatibility options might bring back those old bugs? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Jefferson

I'm curious...how did you get that option to display?

    I fear that Jefferson doctored that image - see his comment in red. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Ah....I guess it was too early in the morning for me, huh? Jefferson I would like to know if you did, as Hans said, doctor the screen snap or ....if Emulate Page X of Y is a "real" option for you.

Re: Headers/footers & page numbering (Office XP Word)

    Thanks for the help.
After confirming my Office updates were current, I used the print preview and back again, with the update fields option checked on the print tab of Tools/Options. That seemed to fix the problem.
Clearing the background printing tab also seemed to work.
I'll investigate some of the other suggestions during idle moments.

I also began experiencing this anomaly out of the blue this week. Clearing Background Printing fixed it here too (thanks, Andrew)... but doesn't it make you wonder WHY something like that would happen, or better yet, why clearing Background Printing would fix it?! <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

Re: Headers/footers & page numbering (Office XP Word)

This one is REALLY getting me annoyed. If I observe "Page 1 of 1", "Page 2 of 2" etc on successive footnotes, I click on the page field, and it magically changes to "Page 1 of 4", "Page 2 of 4" and so on. Fine.

But when I print the wretched thing, either to a physical printer or to PDF995's virtual printer, it sometimes reverts to "Page 1 of 1", etc. But not always. Seems to happen on Word 2002 SP2 as well as older levels...

It looks to me that the only absolute way out is to put the maximum page number (4, in my case) in manually, which rather defeats the object of the feature! [grrrh] <img src=/S/eyeout.gif border=0 alt=eyeout width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Ita, esto, quidcumque...
