    How to switch off word counting (Office 2003, Win XP)

    Hi,

    I have used the search for how to switch off the counting (calculation) of words when I open, save and close a document. haven't been able to locate where to switch off this calculation. It looks as it follows only the document.

    Can anyone give me a hint of where to look for the setting?

    Many Thanks!!

    Sorry, I don't understand - what do you mean by the counting/calculation of words?

    Hi Hans,

    Well:

    I open a document and in the Status bar (in the bottum of the screen) a text tells me what Word is doing. The text says:
    "Word is calculating the word count"

    Opening any document this is happening. But for some documents this calculation goes on for a long time. It looks to me that it calculates number of words in the document.

    I don't have Word 2003, so it might be new there. Or do you have an add-in that performs this word count? In all versions up to and including Word 2002 (XP), word count was not automatic. On the Word Count toolbar in Word 2002, for example, you MUST click the Recount button to update the word count.

    Thanks hans,

    There must be a setting somewhere, or may be my code in the reference template has some code that starts it. I haven't made any code that should do so, but you never know. I will have to follow the the code when opening the document and see if I can find any suspicious things.

    Thanks!

    Hi again,

    I followed the code when running the macros and found:

    When the following code was run it started calculating:
    Me.txtTitle1 = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropert yTitle)
    Me.txtSubject1 = ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties(wdPropert ySubject)

    exept when running those two:
    Me.txtLeadTextDocName = ActiveDocument.CustomDocumentProperties("LeadTxtFI LEORPATH")
    Me.txtDocName = ActiveDocument.CustomDocumentProperties("FILEORPAT H")

    It means that it start calculating each time it is looking for a BuiltInProperty.

    Why should it?

    I'm sorry, I don't know if that is possible. I suspect that retrieving a built in property forces Word to update all the summary information. If that is correct, there is no way around it, but I admit this is pure guesswork. Let's hope others know more about this.
