Ultimate Paint: Free Download at Bottom of Page
Ultimate Paint Features
Special Effects Preview

This free graphics program has considerably more functionality than MS Paint with 100 plugin filters and dozens of special effect. The free version has full functionality as the shareware; what you pay for is the option to update later. You can browse images, and browse more than 100 effects as well.

If you down load & install, be warned..... I tried this product twice. On each occasion I had problems. First of all half of the features failed to work and/or caused the application to stop responding. When I tried the uninstall it totally crashed my system. After reboot, and a second try of uninstall....it worked.

FYI: If it makes a difference, I'm running XP-home on an HP XT933 with 256mb ram.

I'm really sorry about that, Bernie. I hate posting a program and seeing that Banana man/or woman cheering a successful uninstall. It hasn't been buggy for the people I know that have it. I've been trying the features as the night goes on, and I'll try as many as I can in the next few days--and if you want to tell me the ones that wouldn't work ,I'll put them first on my list. So far it's working well, and I'm enthusiastic about drawing a user pic. I also will check a forum where a number of people have been downloading this and trying it out in the last couple days, and post their concensus/experience either way.

Apology not needed, but appreciated. All free bees come with some risk.
I was thinking that it may be in conflict with some other process but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.
After the first install, it took a few seconds to load & wouldn't do much of anything. I uninstalled, and started from scratch with the download. This time it appeared to work fine however some jpg files would not preview. If I tried to open them I would get an invalid file format message. Had problems with the rotate & other image features resulting in system hang & not responding. At this point I got a little frustrated & didn't do much more.
After reading your post, I may give it another shot & see what happens.

Re: Free Photoshop Alternative: Ultimate Paint

The features are working well for me--nice free program; give it one more try. I go through trying to figure out what on my system is causing some pesky little glitch all too frequently. A large one smacked me today--a conflict between something I did to the OS that broke Norton System Works and turned it completely off, wouldn't let me uninstall it or reinstall it to facilitate uninstalling and mocked me saying I had no access because I wasn't the Norton Supervisor (a job I have applied for before because of the great weather in Cupertino, Caleeyefornia). The most enjoyable symptom of all: loading web pages completely was disabled while I could ping any site and it's IP address perfectly. I got knocked off the web for the second of three days (Monday by a systemic Level 3 problem).

I think it was a low level system error, but worried about a winsock.dll error or some other conflict, but was able to blow Norton System Works into cyberspace in 10 glorious seconds and fix my problem, my month old corrupted History, and the Ctrl+H=summon all your posts in red function came back to OE newsgroups.

NIS or NPF starts in the disabled mode, or the icon does not appear in the system tray

I think it is absolutely relevant. Part of the problem Bernie has with Ultimate Paint may well be an age old one. 1) Software side effects and interactions, like those of multiple medications at once, are very difficult to troubleshoot and ferret out. 2) Because Ultimate Paint is working well for many people without a hitch, I think it will work once whatever is conflicting with it is out of the way. Finding that could be extremely tough if not impossible.

I'm sorry Doc, I fail to see the relevance of multiple links to the Symantec site. If it is "absolutely relevant" it would appear you are insinuating that Norton software is the root cause of the problem above.

Re: Free Photoshop Alternative: Ultimate Paint

I wasn't aiming to clutter or veer the thread in another direction, and maybe that's the result. But more often than I wished on my own machines, and in the newsgroups, I find myself trying to figure out culprits and the interactions that cause buggy behavior. I know the sequence of the problem I just had in a very quick time frame, but I can't say exactly the components of the players that caused the problem and why with precision. I do know the software in the mix that stopped every web page from loading, and I can't remember being able to ping every site/IP address (except [/i] microsoft.com which is probably by design),[/i] and being able to reach none of them. I know that blowing NIS off fixed it immediately along with a couple other things that had been bugging me. That's the second time NIS locked me out and Symantec says that's a frequent occurence when something causes it to "break."

It's particularly frustrating when you know uninstalling and reinstalling might be worthwhile, and software (NIS) tells you you aren't authorized to configure it, uninstall it or reinstall it. This "lockout" with Norton doesn't have anything to do with the Windows permissions scheme.
