'type mismatch' when add form control (Excel 2002 (SP2))

A co-worker of mine has a strange error with his Excel. When he creates a new form and adds a control such as a listbox, it always returns error 'type mismatch' when the control is first applied to the form. This happens after the mouse button is released in the drawing area. It only happens the first time (each time Excel is opened). I have never seen this error before so suspect one of the Excel libraries is corrupt. It happens on any of the control types, not just list box.

The PC is company owned and formatted so he's not allowed to just install/reinstall Excel (our IT dept blocks the 'remove' button). I know there are DOS commands that can be run to re-register things but don't know what they are (or if they'd help in this situation).

Any ideas?

Deb,

If this concerns controls on userforms, it might be a problem with MSForms. Can your co-worker insert controls on a form in Word?

The instruction to re-register the forms DLL would be:
- Select Start | Run...
- Type REGSVR32 FM20.DLL (that's a zero in there, not the letter "O")
- Click OK or press Enter.
No idea whether this will help. It won't hurt.

I had my co-worker try your suggestion and he said he still gets the Type Mismatch error. He also tried it in Word (adding a control to a form from the IDE) and said he gets the same error. What now? Should he uninstall Office? To do this he'll have to open a case with IT since they have disabled the 'remove' button. I wonder if he could just reinstall Office (which we can do since there's an internal web site that has tons of software we can download and install).

I didn't have him try the Detect & Repair feature. I'll get him to do that and see what happens.

Thnx,
Deb

I just found this in the MS KB, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;EN-US;Q821292 but not sure if it really is the problem or not. The article states there is a hotfix for this if you already have SP2 (which we do) and that the fix will be in SP3 (not yet released).

If this is indeed the fix for the error, then why wouldn't everyone see it? I guess it's much more complicated than that as usual - too many other variables which we do not know about (internal fussing of Office).

Thnx,
Deb

There's not enough info in that KB article to know the real problem.

Other than a mysterious bug, such as the one mentioned in the KB article you cited, I would suspect this to be an initialization problem in loading the userform, perhaps due to an interaction with an Excel add-in from, say, Acrobat, or whatever, or some macro.

Also, if adding the control to an extant Userform, I've seen userforms get corrupted in strange ways, so adding to them becomes difficult.
Might try recreating the userform. Do NOT Copy anty of the controls, create them anew.

Re: 'type mismatch' when add form control (Excel 2002 (SP2))

Actually the error doesn't happen just when the form is used (run), it happens when the form is being created. I start with an empty form (Insert/Form) and then I select a control, move the mouse from the tool box, draw the size of the control on the form and releasing the button. This is when the error occurs on the button release. Very strange indeed. If I just press OK to acknowledge the error, I can add more controls w/o any error.

Since it also happend in his copy of Word (while designing the form, not just when it's run), it's some weird Office interaction error. I agree the MS description in the KB article I found is very vague.
