Folder List sort order (Outlook 2002)

Here's something that's more of an annoyance rather than a problem. One of our users complained that in her folder list the Public Folders is listed above her Outlook Today (mailbox) folder. Typically, it is the other way around. The problem happens consistently. We already tried having her log on to a new machine, created a new profile, ran the cleanviews option, did clean sweep, looked through the different option settings and searched through the MS Knowledge Base. Could not find a way to make the Outlook Today folder show before Public Folders. We are on Exchange 2000. We also checked the mailbox on the server and found nothing out of the ordinary. On the good side, it doesn't prevent our user from using Outlook. However, she is quite annoyed since according to her it wasn't like that before. Anyone have any idea?

Could this have something to do with the order in which the Mail Services in the Control Panel applet were installed?

Re: Folder List sort order (Outlook 2002)

From what I can see, the sort order is strictly alphabetical.
(We do not use Exchange server here, so the following may be irrelevant or misleading...)

If I load another data file, say an archive called 2003.pst, this appears before Outlook Today which carries the default title "Personal Folders".
However, if I rename "Personal Folders" to "0Personal Folders", it (Outlook Today) is listed before "2003" by virtue of the fact "0" comes before "2".

Does that help or give you any clues?

Re: Folder List sort order (Outlook 2002)

I don't think it has something to do with the mail services. We don't use anything else except for MS Exchange. I agree that this is strictly alphabetical. I have done similar tests and it did the same thing. This is the way our Outlook Today shows: it shows Outlook Today - [Mailbox - mailbox name]. The word Mailbox seems to be automatically appended by Exchange. As such, the Public Folder always appears after the user's mailbox. In some instances though, Exchange doesn't add the word Mailbox. In this case, the user's name starts with an "S". Since Mailbox doesn't appear before her name, it lists the user's Outlook Today below Public Folder. I guess the more pertinent question is why does Exchange add the word Mailbox and in some instances it doesn't?

Re: Folder List sort order (Outlook 2002)

did anyone come up with a fix for this? I just had my machine re-imaged from 2K to XP and now my folder list is sorted in some odd manner, if it were alpha, i'd be set, but nooooo....my old machine (both run Outlook 2002) was Outlook today, Personal, Public - new machine is Personal, Public, Outlook today....

can't find anything on MS site or within (dare I say it) the paper clip guy.....

    Thanks!
