Updater\Scanner

Not too many eons ago, there was a software and driver scanner available from CNET and also Symantec. The Cnet version was called Catch Up and Symantec had it's own for a while, then just linked to the CNET site.

This would scan your system for installed software and drivers, then do a look up in it's database to try to locate newer versions or updates that were available from the manufacturers. You could select any updates there and download and or install them right from the link.
I found this VERY handy in keeping things right up to date instead of manually checking for newer versions.
Then for whatever reason the site is still active but says that Catch Up has been discontinued, with no reason given.

Does anyone know of a similar service to Catch Up? I've done some "googling" around but have yet to come up with something.

Yes, that was great value. I always took it that the whole concept went the way of Winfiles and much of the earlier freeware stuff.

OK, everybody loves a smart aleck!

Hey, that's a great idea. Wish I had known about it back when. Unfortunately, I'd never heard of it, so we'll have to wait to see if someone else has any G2 on the topic. I plan on keeping tuned in to see what this thread yields.

Have a NICE weekend. Kentucky is supposed to be in the 60s and 70s for the next three days. I think I'll take my bride out for a stroll in the sunshine tomorrow!

Bob,
I like CatchUp also. It is very time consuming to stay up with updates. I don't like all the automatic updating especially at work but also at home. With all the interaction between various pieces of software I'd rather be in control of what gets updated and when. That said, take a look at http://www.bigfix.com. I haven't examined at this in several years. There is a free personal version and several for $$$ business solutions.

Ken & Big Al,

Don't ask me how I did it but I started to type the new threadpost and I guess my big thumb hit some key that it shouldn't have and there was the post without any text. I THOUGHT I clicked edit fast enough but apparently there you two were, right on top of things. Whew!!

I'm not sure that this is the same (& I haven't tried it), but Cybermedia recently sold Oil Change to McAfee. You can read the article at the above site...as it says, <!t>[its]<!/t> future is uncertain.

Re: Updater\Scanner

Hi Phil,

Thanks.
Yes, Oil Change is ( was ) in the same genre. The problem right now anyway is that it currently only supports Win 95,98,ME. Unless McAfee upgrades it and updates it, I'm afraid it will be hopelessly out of date with todays programs.
We will have to wait and see what McAfee does with it.
