Autoshape/ text box color (Office XP Pro/ SP-2)

    Hello All,

Before I launch into my tale of woe...could someone take a look at the attached pic and tell me if the following is a bug (or "new feature" in MicroSoft-ese)??

What it is: overlapping autoshapes (does it for text boxes too!)
Applications problem(?) seen in: Word, Excel, Publisher (didn't try any other apps)

My system: Win XP Pro OS w/ latest, greatest updates applied & all hardware drivers current on HP Pavilion a262n 'puter

    Thanks for yer time!

Have you checked the value of Format > Autoshape > Layout > Advanced > Allow Overlap

Thanks for such a fast reply!!

Yes I did--it is checked to allow overlap. The percentage of transparency for each image is the same, likewise the color is the same also.

Can you explain your problem more clearly. I thought you were complaining because autoshapes were overlapping.

Can you also check whether your autoshapes are inline, or shapes. The default behaviour is set from Tools > Options > Edit > "Insert /Paste picture as:"

My apologies for lack of clarity!

I want the autoshapes to overlap. I'm "coloring in" irregular areas on a map, so the seamless coloration of the overlapping images is important. When the same task is done in MS Word 2000--there is no discernable difference in the "depth" of the image colors; it looks like one image.

Checked the Tools Options & tried different settings, then drawing 2 shapes. It seemed to make no difference.

Can you post a small sample document with 2 autoshapes that won't overlap. This is almost certainly something trivial that we can fix with one of the available options.

    Hello,

Thank you for your time, StuartR!
Created a test doc as requested--there are 2 autoshapes and 2 text boxes. Have even tried enabling such things as "Use printer metrics to lay out documents" from the Tools>Options>Compatibility menu, to no avail.

Here's what I've tried looking at as far as MS Office installation & such: uninstalled entire Office XP Pro suite--
**reinstalled from original CD & tried drawing a text box and autoshape in Publisher, Word & Excel..still same result using three different color printer drivers (all known to be good). Result: not fixed
**downloaded the SP-1 for Office XP and tried above drawing test. Result: not fixed
**downloaded the SP-2 for Office XP and tried the drawing test again. Result: not fixed

Have another computer running Win 98SE OS--installed MS Office XP Pro from original CD and tried drawing test. Result: same problem still occurs.

Without making any other changes, I opened your word document and dragged the rectangles so that they overlap. Can you not do that with this document?

I will post a screen shot showing how this document looks on my PC in the next post, here is the edited document as it appears to me.

Stuart, your screenshot corresponds to what I get, and what I would expect for shapes set to 50 % transparency. But Bastet wrote "When the same task is done in MS Word 2000--there is no discernable difference in the "depth" of the image colors; it looks like one image." To me, that seems to be a bug in Word 2000 (can't check, I don't have Office 2000) - if you superimpose two transparent shapes, the overlapping part should look darker, just as when you lay one plastic sheet partly on top of another one.

    Hans,

I seem to have totally misunderstood the question. I thought the problem was an inability to create overlapping shapes and text boxes!

Maybe the original poster will clarify for us.

Re: Autoshape/ text box color (Office XP Pro/ SP-2)

    Hello Hans,

Thank you for taking a look--I appreciate your involvement. I misread Stuart's request for example of doc w/ boxes that didn't/ couldn't overlap--my mistake; I could have clarified right then. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> I apologize for the confusion!

You are correct--what I'm interested in is this: the same thing when done in Word 2k looks like my attached pic. What the pic shows--overlapping autoshapes and text boxes of the same color set to semi-transparent (percentage not adjustable in Word 2k). When you/ I do the same thing in Word 2002--the result is the same as Stuart's screen shot.

So it brings me to the question of: is Word/ Office XP capable of doing the same thing as Word/ Office 2k? Or is it some sort of feature that is no longer available in Word/ Office XP? Or.....is it a bug of some sort in one, the other or both Office Suites?

I've tried to rule out printer driver issues, video card stuff and general operating systems differences. What I really need is someone to say that it is/ isn't related to MS Office XP; then I can pursue other avenues of troubleshooting. I'd be really disappointed if it turned out to be something not available any more--it's really neat thing to be able to do without using some high end graphics software.

Thanks again to both Stuart and Hans!!

Re: Autoshape/ text box color (Office XP Pro/ SP-2)

    Hello Susan,

Apparently, the way Word treats shapes has changed. The semi-transparent option has been replaced by a transparency slider. The only way I see to let shapes overlap without color change in the overlapping part is to set transparency to 0 %; if it is set to 50 %, which should correspond to semi-transparent, the overlap will have a deeper color. I think this is by design - the new behavior is more realistic. Unfortunately it is not what you want...

    Hello Hans,

    <sad sigh>

My quest has ended...I'll hafta adjust my (beautiful!) maps for my customer so that when they upgrade their software (they currently use Office 2k) there won't be wailing and gnashing of teeth (that would be me!) when this little gotcha appears.

    Thanks again, everyone, for your invaluable help <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>
