    Exchange Server

    Hi.

We have a Windows 2000 server running Microsoft Exchange, and we have Veritas backup software with a tape drive. The backup runs correctly, but in recent days has been taking an ever-increasing amount of time. The size of data has gone from 8 to 10 GBs, but the time required has gone from 6 to 16 hours. Backups are run overnight, and this is starting to impinge on the next business day. I've had a look at the backup log files, and the backup throughput is very slow on the drive that holds the data. The log lists over 1,000 files as "in use -- backed up". Other than shutting down the Exchange server itself, is there a way to close enough of these files to speed the thing up?

    Ed Lycett.

<img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> Stretching the grey cells a bit here but I remember that opening a mailboxes used to be the bottle-neck when backing up Exchange. Has the number of users grown an any extent?

I can offer some comparisons if they help - total data backed up 16Gb in 5hr 55min, of this there are 93 mailboxes with a total of 4.5Gb. HTH

At the risk of a "sucking eggs" tutorial 2 things I would check
    - is the Veritas remote backup agent still running on your mail server? This can slow things down a lot.
    - check your network card - we've had cards switch from 100 to 10Mb or full to half duplex - again this will cripple the backup
