IEEE 1394 HD case probs (XP (all updates))

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba notebook with a 1394 port (the smaller type connector, 4p). I recently bought a 3.5" hard disk case and a Sygate 120gb drive to put in it.

The problem is, the drive will show up whenever i plug it in. But after a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes, i hear the device disconnection sound, and the drive dissapears.

I have the jumpers set to 'master', as the original settings didnt work (read light stayed on permanently).
The heavyweight cord which came with the case had a large (6s) plug at both ends, plus an adapter so it would fit. I had no luck with this arrangement, there seemed to be an unreliable connection.
I bought a lightweight cable with the correct plugs, and was able to format the new HD, and am able to use the drive for short periods as described above.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is it possible that you need to update drivers for the unit? I admit I am unfamiliar with 1394 drives, although I have never had a problem with other 1394 peripherals.

    Could be.
The instructions say that no drivers are needed for XP.
So i havent installed any. Do you mean drivers for the 1394 port, or drivers for the HD case?
Any suggestions as to how i can do this?
    Thanks

I was thinking that perhaps there was an updated driver for the 1394 bus. Have a look through this Google search.

I'm really not familiar either with a 1394 drive. But, can you set any power savings options? Such as, power down after x minutes.
