Windows (XP SP1a) Update stuck at 0% (Windows XP SP1a)

This is the most frustrating thing I have come across in aaaaaaaaaaaaages and it's making me a little batty/obsessed, so anything anyone can do to help would be greatly appreciated. Here's the deal. I try to do a Windows Update, I click on Scan for updates and it hangs at 0% for about 5 minutes before coming back with a page that says there is a problem - no kidding. I used the Microsoft troubleshooter in which it "suggests" downloading and installing the latest scripting engine 5.6. Did that, it didn't work. Then it suggests repairing IE. Did that, it didn't work. Scanned some Google groups and tried a variety of things including changing the HTTP settings (Did that, it didn't work), clearing any checked items in the LAN settings (Did that, it didn't work), resetting the CSDVersion in the registry to 0 (Did that, it didn't work). Registering a plethora of items using regserv (Did that, it didn't work) and finally in an act of desperation, formatting the hard drive, reinstalling Windows XP and before installing anything else (other than the drivers necessary to operate) I tried to run the update.... the EXACT same thing happened. By the way... before anyone suggests going down the firewall route.... there is NO firewall, not a software, hardware, shardware, semblance of a firewall. HELP!!

Eva,

Have you tried to manually download the update controls?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manually download and install the Windows Update controls:
Create a folder on your desktop to temporarily store the controls.
Visit one of the following Microsoft Web sites to download the Windows Update controls file:
If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/...icode/iuctl.cab

If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/...ansi/iuctl.cabp

Save the Iuctl.cab file to the folder that you created on your desktop.
Right-click the Iuctl.cab file, and then click Extract to.
Point to the folder that you created on your desktop, and then click Extract.
Open the folder on your desktop, right-click the Iuctl.inf file, and then click Install.
Delete the folder that you created on your desktop.

This is probably going to sound like a stupid response, but have you tried checking the Date/Time on the computer? I ran into something very similar and after about 2 hours of fustration going through everything I could think of, I checked the date/time and found it was sitting on the year 2000 instead of 2004. Kicked it up, rebooted and windowsupdate worked like a charm.
