Temporary freeze (IE 6.0 WIN XP HOME)

A friend has a problem in that when he opens Internet Explorer, it will be fine for about 5 seconds, then it "freezes" for about 20 seconds and then will be OK again. If he clicks on a link and opens another page, the same thing happens. Initially, things are OK for about 5 seconds, then it freezes for about 20 seconds and then all is ok. I did check TASKMANAGER and everything seems ok there. I ran ADAWARE and SPYBOT and that made no difference. Also did a System Restore to a week ago, and again no change.

My friend says he has installed all the updates for Internet Explorer - all CRITICAL updates are installed.

Is this for every site or only particular ones? Could be flash animation or java applet loading.

It is for every site. I tested it by going to DELL.COM and other run-of-the-mill type sites. The site opens, everything is ok for about 5 seconds, then it just freezes. The scroll function does not work. After about 20 seconds, all is OK.

The freezing may be the Ads being blocked. Have him turn OFF the add blocker and see if the problem is still there.

    I have that problem when I run NAV & I have a very old version. If I turn off NAV, I surf 10 times as fast. (I need a new AV program) <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Already tried it with and without the AD blocker. Did not make any difference. Keep in mind that this is a fairly recent issue - has just started within the last couple of days. He "says" he has not done anything different or installed any new software. I have run System Restore and also ADAWARE and SPYBOT without making a difference.

I too am having the exact same problem w/ IE6.x I am running WinMe, so it's not an OS problem. It just started with me about the same time as you. I am trying to find a fix for it as well. I have tried the IE6 repair function, but it doesn't help the situation. I look forward to any additional input. I am running Computer Associates EZ_Antivirus, Zone Alarm firewall, and no popup software. It was working fine with all these a few weeks ago. The only speculation I have is a corrupted update, but we will see.

    trebor,

    Try this longshot.
I had a similar problem to this a long time ago and I don't recall exactly what I did to correct it, but one of the things was to got to the Windows Prefetch folder and delete the contents ( not the folder ) and let the OS recreate the prefetch on reboot.
I have to search my memory or something to see if I can recall the complete fix.

    Hey Bob,

So I should simply find the PREFETCH folder and delete everything within the folder and then restart the computer. Is that correct?

    Yep, should be Windows>Prefetch.

IT IS A MIRACLE - My friend found that the issue was gone today. He did nothing in particular - it is simply no longer there. Hmmmmm????

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.
