File Locked for Editing (Excel 2002 SP2/ Win XP)

I'm not sure exactly where to post this, but I'll start here since the problem file is an Excel spreadsheet. One of my spreadsheets that I update several times a day has a problem. When I open the file, it says that it's Read-only because it's already in use. (It's not.) I've saved other copies of the file and they are working fine now. When I try to delete the original file, it says that it's being used by another program or person.

    Here's what I have done:

    1. Shut everything and Rebooted.
    2. Checked the properties. Read-only is not checked.

Neither of those attempts have worked. When I look in the Task Manager after I have opened this file, there are two entries for MS Excel. When I open any other Excel file there is only one entry.

Suggestions about how I can get rid of this problem file would be most welcome.

    Thanks

Can you SAVEAS the readonly copy with a new name? Then close excel, reboot. then try to delete the original afterwards. Now rename the new copy.

    A couple of questions:

1- Is this file on your local hard disk or on a network drive?

2- If it is on your local hard drive, is your hard drive shared on a network?

3- Is the file by any chance in your XLStart or Alternate Startup directory?

    Steve,

I've made a new copy, but I still can't delete the old file. It says it's in use.

    Legare,

    1. File is on my local hard disk.
    2. No, it's not shared.
    3. No, it's in a regular My Documents folder.

I will assume that you have rebooted your system since you noticed this problem. If not, then try that.

The only other thing I can think of would be to boot into safe mode and see if you can delete the file.

Look in the folder (My Documents) for any temp files including file starting with a "~" and delete them.

With these temp files the systems thinks the file is in use.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

I cleaned up the old files with ~*.* . Still didn't work, but I did find a folder with a name starting with ~, since it was empty I deleted and everything's fine since then and I deleted the file.
