Re: Cannot delete files or folders (XP Pro/SP1)

Is this just a timing thing? What happens if you go to a different folder, then return, and then retry the delete? Can you delete what you want after a re-boot? Is this a local file?

Cannot delete files or folders (XP Pro/SP1)

Edited by Bigaldoc to add URL code.[/i] See the Quick Guide.

This happened to me many times before and to fix it, I have to reboot the computer. I am not sure what is causing it.

Here's the scenario: I'll be working on a file in Word, close the file, close Word. I'd then go to Explorer, select the file and hit the delete key. I will get an error message saying that the file is open. This also happens when I want to delete a folder.

    I found this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...p;Product=winxp

but I am logged in as an administrator. I do not understand, LOL.

Do you use Outlook and have Word as the e-mail editor? If so and you've had Outlook open you may still have Word running in the background. Can you post a list of the processes that are active when you have the problem?

It's in my original post. What other explanation do you need? I am not using Outlook, only Outlook Express. The file is not an email attachment. Something that is created in Word.

"What other explanation do you need?"

If you are using MS Word as your email editor in Outlook or Outlook Express, Word MAY NOT shut down completely, until the process has been KILLED. This may also keep some of the temp files open that are linked to the Word file that you are trying to delete.

Also while you have Windows Explorer open, are there any left over temp files in that folder ?

    Hi Dave! I am just curious..............if MS Word is the email editor, would it show up in the "task manager" process tab? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> I don't use it as editor, <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 alt=nope width=15 height=15> too many cautions from Woody about that!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Just set up on my laptop to do this and YES, WINWORD.EXE is running as a process.
And it (WINWORD) will start up before Outlook does and not close until after Outlook is closed. So if ANYTHING keeps the Outlook process running I would think that WINWORD will continue running until the Outlook process stops.

<img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15> for the reply. I keep tabs on what is running as a process because I have had difficulty from time to time with programs not wanting to actually close properly. Outlook is a great one for doing that on this particular computer. It looks like it closes but it doesn't really. So then the next time I try to open Outlook up again, it won't start. Then I will check Task Manager and sure enough, I will have two Outlook processes running. So I close them down and start over and that works for me. Windows XP is pretty solid but it can do some strange things sometimes!! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> I hope I haven't lead this thread astray but maybe kittynut could check out her "running processes" and see if Winword is still active even if it seems to be shutdown!! Have a great week-end! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Cannot delete files or folders (XP Pro/SP1)

Notepad is selected for editor on HTML documents.

Next time this happens, I will check if Word is still open even if I've already closed it. Are there any reports of Word not closing even if it doesn't show in the Task Bar?

"Notepad is selected for editor on HTML documents"
This has NOTHING to do with email, only the HTML web page editor that will be used if you do a "View Source".

By design, WINWORD process will continue to run until Outlook is closed by ALL processes.

Do you mean I cannot delete files in Word or Explorer if Outlook Express is open? Please explain, this does not make sense to me, LOL.

Like I mentioned on my original post, I tried to delete a file both in Word and Explorer, where Outlook Express is NOT even open, and the file WILL NOT delete.

Re: Cannot delete files or folders (XP Pro/SP1)

As long as you continue to use Word as your email editor, this may be correct. You stated that you had close both Word and OE, but did you go to "Task Manager" and see for a fact the Windoword amd OE processes were shut down?

Have you checked to see if there are ANY Word temp files still in the folder?

If any of the temp files that are related to the file that you are trying to delete are still active, you will NOT be able to delete that file. Also if the file has NOT been sent and is sitting in the "Outbox" you may not be able to send it.

I think if you were to quit using Word as your email editor you will no longer have this problem.

Re: Cannot delete files or folders (XP Pro/SP1)

Thanks Dave. But how do I stop using Word as email editor? I do not find any settings in Outlook Express.

BTW, no, there were no tmp files in the folder. No, I did not check if OE or Word processes were shut down. I thought if you close them, they will automatically shut down, LOL. I guess not!
