Oulook synchronises your exchange information with a local copy on the c: drive it can be turned off through your Account setup you can also change what it synchonises through Ctrl + Alt + S

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

Whoops!!! "I run OL on my desktop (now Exchange). " in my original message should read "I run OL on my desktop (NOT Exchange). "

Since not exchange, something else going on. I tried CAS in any event and it just gives me my Send/Receive groups setup for poling my POP3. Is this where it hung up - trying to download messages and the 'sync' message was misleading (for me)?

    What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

I run OL on my desktop (NOT Exchange). I came back from lunch today and OL seemed to be locked up. The tray icon said something like Outlook was synchronzing but I no idea with what. I do not have autoarchiving. Ultimately I had to close via Task Mgr to get it back. What is this feature and is it something I can change?

Are you using a dialup? Sounds like it encountered a problem while trying to download a message, effectively syncing (that can't be a real word!!? certainly not with that spelling!) your pop server with the local version

    No dialup - cable connection.

Do you have a PDA - or PDA-related software installed on your machine?

I do have Hotsync to be able to sync my Palm but I haven't used it since 2003 and it has not been loaded yet.

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

So this isn't a case of having migrated your settings from a previous version of Outlook and the Synchronisation having been orphaned because Hotsync isn't installed yet?

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

I need to clarify. I did migrate last week from OL2k2 to OL2k3. Normally there is an icon in the toolbar for setting for syncing my palm pilot but it no longer shows up. I've not tried to reinstall anything; I just assumed it didn't migrate, which I believe to be the case. As a result nothing associated with Hotsync or the PDA should be associated with OL.

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

That's what I'm trying to get at. For some reason, the migration may have left Outlook with the concept that it needs to Synchronise with something - even though that something is no longer there. HTH

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

Understand. However, the sync software is actually a stand alone product, not integral with OL. Only thing it has associated with outlook is an icon to allow setting parameters. It (ol2k2) never synced without loading a separate application.

Nonetheless, I will be reinstalling the s/w so I get that button back and who knows...

One other thing; this happened only once (so far). Maybe it was a 'runaway byte'? <g>

A "final" note on this problem. It seems to have corrected itself. It only happened to me twice and none since. I have updated my sync software for the PDA as well so who knows...

Re: What is Synchronization (Outlook 2003)

I have had a similar issue to this when upgrading to Office 2003 from 2002. I frequently connect to our Exchange Server through a dial up and now I have noticed that the Synchronisation of the Offline Folders no longer functions correctly. Rather than working after I click the Send/Receive button I have to open the Send/Receive settings and select the 'Microsoft Exchange Server' Only and then choose the 'Inbox' option from the menu.

There is no PDA synchronisation software on my machine.

BTW if this is the wrong place to post this please forgive me as this is the first time I have visited the lounge.

    Welcome to the Lounge!

Posting here on this issue was a good decision.
