unlimited download time (internet explorer 6.0)

Is there anyway to configure internet explorer so you can have unlimited download time without being kicked off line? I have some files that need to be downloaded, but because they are so large....it is best to try to download them during the night while I am asleep because I have only a 56K modem. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

Hi John:
I don't think it has to do with IE so much as it does with Internet traffic, power surges, etc. It's certainly best to download during off peak hours, but Internet traffic is world wide, so while you're sleeping... . When I had a 56K modem (& many downloads were smaller then), I would try doing it at night. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. There are download managers that will pick up where it left off. Some have a bad reputation as Spyware. You could search the Software forum & Google for Download Managers. I'm sure that some are good.
Hope this helps,

Also be aware that some ISP's will bump you off if there is NO keyboard and mouse action after a certain time.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

It has been a long time since I was on a modem, but I remember the same thing that Dave mentions. It is the ISP that would kick you off after a certain amount of time if there is no activity. There used to be (still are?) freeware programs that would intermittently reach out and touch sites -- just to keep your connection. I think there was one called "StayConnected" or "KeepConnection" -- but I really haven't thought about this for years!!

Add: Check out this:
StayConnected -- that is shareware at $25, but I think there are free ones out there.

Add2: Here is a freeware one -- don't know how good any of these are:
Connection Keeper 6.1

You should check your dial-up networking configuration properties - in Start|Settings - to see whether there is any disconnect options that you can configure to prevent disconnection. A download manager that I used to use for a number of years was Getright.

Edited: Some download managers include a feature to keep the connection alive until the download is complete.
